Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whores?
With the increased sales and manufacturing of male cosmetics and the proliferation of makeover shows for men, what is your take on "metrosexuality"?
Women, do you find the look attractive?
Men, do you feel indifferent or strongly about it?
Do you think this is a short-lived fad or an actual movement?

Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
I've only met a few metrosexuals in my life and they're all very uptight and not very fun to be around.
I have no problem with guys who wants to take care of themselves with good a hygiene, but when it comes to make up and nailpolish...hmmm, yes. I think I'm a little turned off by that.
Maybe it's what society has always taught me, that men should be macho and burly (okay not really) and maybe I'm just not openminded about men wanting to look equally stunning as their female date. I just feel that those men just have a big ego problem and are often too sensitive about their appearances. In other words, I just don't like it. I really think that it's more an attitude problem that I don't like, rather than the actual putting-on-make-up-deal.
Some guys look great with makeup...some. Some, just look frightening.
And to answer your last question, it could be an actual movement seeing as how people (especially teenagers) these days are so influenced by bands/artists and celebrities (whom are also influenced by fashion industries).

I'm all for it!
What I really like about this new trend of metrosexuality is that it challenges stereotypes, both of gay men and straight men. Although one could argue that the distinction of metrosexual is in itself a way to keep gays on the outside, I suppose... But regardless, I think it's a step in the right direction.
Plus it makes more eye candy for all male-lovers.
It also allows for more common interests or small-talk between men and women! We already have girls infiltrating the infotech/gaming scene (as well as other traditionally male occupations) - doesn't it make sense that men would indulge in traditionally female fields like fashion? (In a bigger and more mainstream way, that is.)
Some questions this raises are:
-Is the male/female dichotomy being broken down, and are the genders being homogonized? If so, is this a positive or negative change?
-Does being a metrosexual actually make a man less of a man (or to be perceived as such)? Can a man be stylish and manly?
The downside is that metrosexuals might possibly run themselves into debt just to buy stylish clothing.
Or perhaps some men who are metro's at heart are unable to express themselves properly due to lack of funds, or societal pressure!
But yeah, I'm all in favor of eye candy.

Personally, I'm in favor of breaking down the barriers and allowing the same benefits for both sexes. I dont see why people would be against this.
I dont think I would ever wear makeup or anything, but thats just the way I am. It seems like quite a chore... and I'm lazy.
I think if a guy wants to wear makeup, then all the power to him. It doesnt really affect me. Though, I think a lot of women look a lot better without makeup... so I'm sure the same would be true for men.

Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
I think it's ridiculous. The whole thing is a joke to me. Besides, I don't even like when women act like that and it seems to me that metrosexuals can be more extreme than women in that area.. Also, I hate when people do things for the purpose of "making a statement." This seems at least partly like one of those things.
Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
I think it's a good thing, although shows like Queer Eye are a little overboard for me. Sure, I think it'd be great if people showed up at my door and gave my whole lifestyle a makeover, but does it have to be a bunch of gay guys just to appeal to the whole "gay is in" world that we live in?
I admit I do put a little bit of effort into looking good, and I'm quite self-conscious which is probably the reason behind it. I don't think there's anything wrong with men trying to look good and fashionable. In fact, I think it's time regular men started looking fashionable, to remove that notion that only gay guys know how to dress properly.

Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
I personally don't think it is anything new, someone just decided to give it at name. Of course there are guys that really like to dress well and groom themselves properly that most certainly are not homosexual, which is the stereotype. I just think metrosexual is going to become another "hot" word and I'm sure we are just on the verge of seeing products designed specifically for "metrosexual men" in stores soon enough, if there aren't already.
Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
Agreed. The term was pinned onto this behavior to promote acceptance of homosexuality gradually and indirectly. Next thing ya know they'll be suckin down peter.j0hn Ayanami wrote:I personally don't think it is anything new, someone just decided to give it at name. Usually I don't care about other people's lifestyles, but the main thing I have against metrosexuals is that they always have that "I'm better than you down-to-earth guys" attitude, and think they're God's gift to women.
Not once have I met a humble metrosexual, but then again when vanity is someone's priority it's hard to be level-headed.

Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
Make up wouldn't look good on a black man huh?
Both of my gf's brothers are total freaking metrosexuals. They care more about their appearance than their own sisters do, their behavior is puzzling to me.
I'm no metrosexual. In fact, other than treatments that are meant purely for relaxation (Ie massages), I don't give a crap about that fancy hygiene stuff. I barely shave as it is, and I have hair patches in my back. I don't mind them, because I don't see them. I don't trim my armpits, though perhaps I should. But I don't think I will do it until it becomes an annoyance. Basically, that's my motto with hygiene (besides daily showers) - if it's not annoying, who cares?
I'd rather waste my money and energy on something other than fancy clothes and fancy hygiene. That's it, really.

yea i think that the overly obssessive nature of MOST Meterosexuals is rediculous, i'd say my last roomate was, and his best friend, who lived right next door. They would sometimes spend over an hour just deceiding on which hat Jacob(roomate) should wear that would look best with the jacket and shoes he's wearing at the moment. It's rediculous to try and make men more feminen, i mean, taking care of yourself is one thing; i do like to take a shower atleast once a day, i wore nail polish once or twice in my life time (mainly due to a dare, and the second time cuz a girl talked im into it)
but expecting men to be more like women is just stupid, get rid of gender barriers? why the fuck are gender barriers centered around how we dress? IMO this is quite possibly the most superficial "movement", hell i wouldnt even call it that much, it's nothing more than a fad... it comes along with the stereotype that gay men dress better and are over all nicer guys, if anything Joei is the prime example that their not always nice guys.
Metrosexuality is just a fad, a coorporate invention trying to get people to buy more expensive clothes/colone/makeup/shit-we-dont-need, and is probably a lot like vegetarianism, ppl dont do it because they really believe that shit, they just do it to feel superior to other people.

So I don't know about the rest of you but we had "metrosexuals" years ago with a band called Eighteen Visions.. except it was called fashioncore.
Oh and not to mention that some actually becomes offended when women reject them! And they end up blaming the women for their faults, rather than looking at themselves first.Reiji wrote:Usually I don't care about other people's lifestyles, but the main thing I have against metrosexuals is that they always have that "I'm better than you down-to-earth guys" attitude, and think they're God's gift to women.

Seriously though, it's not a matter of whether or not you dress in women's attire/influence or whatever, it's the attitude that I find disgusting.

Well, if the guy was really, really good looking, then obviously it's the woman's fault :<Arashi wrote:Oh and not to mention that some actually becomes offended when women reject them! Guys can't be that good looking you silly "stare and comparer." Well, here are some examples:Vibing_V wrote:Can a man be stylish and manly?

I think that the trend of men becoming more concerned about their appearance is a good thing. Manliness is starting to be defined, not by what men think women want, but rather, what women SAY what they want from men. Personally, I find myself starting to follow this trend, as I'm using products like hair-gel and facial scrubs that I didn't think I'd ever waste time or money on. I don't know if it's clever advertising, social pressure, my own personal decisions, or a combination of all three, but I'm also feeling better about myself as a result of it. It makes me feel better that I'm making a concious effort to take better care of myself. However, that doesn't mean that I spend an inordinate amount of time doing that. I still play frisbee, soccer, and football, I still lift weights, I do 'typical guy stuff'. I don't consider myself a metrosexual, but I'm certainly spending more time trying to look good and stay healthy.
I think that the idea of what it means to be a man is being re-defined. Ancient cultures defined manliness far differently than we define it now, so I don't think it's a shift towards being more feminine or away from being 'manly'. I think our culture is simply changing some of the expectations we have. Even in advertising you see it. Commercials begin advertising skin care products for men with ad-lines like "If you wanted to take care of your skin before, all you had was the woman's way. (medicine cabinet full of skin care products) Now you don't have to..."
Perhaps metrosexuals are merely trend-setters for how people will define what it means to be a real man in the future. Or maybe they're just attention whores who want the attention of the opposite sex, but who don't want the stigma of homosexual discrimination on the part of other men.
Either way, I don't see a big problem with the trend, as long as it isn't taken too far and turned into a fringe movement that becomes just as annoying as any other fundamentalist/extremist group.
Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
Certainly Brad Pitt is quite the man, but I must disagree regarding David Beckham :{
Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
As several people have said, the general concept of the movment is a good idea, but has been overdone and almost perverted by some people.
Personally, I like to look good. Of course, sometimes I like to bum it out as well, but if I'm going out or have to dress up or something, I want to look my best. For me, that means I do somethings that are very "metrosexual" (eyebrow trimming for one). I own a lot of clothes from Express, I have several pairs of shoes, multiple jackets, that kinda stuff. I think the extreme side of metrosexuality is a fad, but in the long run, certain things will become mainstream and very common in male fashion.

I have no idea what chavvy means, but I made that post to reiterate the fact that Beckham is a giant fag, and Brad Pitt is hot :{

Re: Topic 004: Metrosexuals - Renaissance Men/Corporate Whor
I've never met any so called metrosexuals. I don't think there's harm with taking care of your appearance and hygiene, it makes you smell and look better. There's a limit. Although I gotta say if my man got his nails done at a salon (no chance of that in hell knowing him) I'd be a bit freaked, but I'd go and get mine done at the same time too
And metrosexuals would likely be good shopping partners from a girl's perspective so there is a good point to vanity
I do think more men should use moisteriser on their skin, especially ones with girlfriends. I know some who refuse to use a moisteriser and some chapstick, and their face n lips is sometimes flaky, and it's not a terribly attractive look....

Are Metrosexuals any different from same sex couples. I dont think so. At least not in my views on it. If u want to us makeup or nail polish be my gust it doesnt offened me at all. I think if that is what u feel makes u into the person u believe u should be then go for it. In the end its how u feel about yourself that makes all the difference, not what others think. I cant say that im attracted to that sort of thing but then again I am a guy myself.

Well it seems logical that men would become more women like as machines are replacing more and more penises each day. As less emphasis is being put on manliness in our society as a result of both feminist backlash and supposed cultural enrichment, men are becoming as vain and conceited as women. With less manly activities to take care of such as working in steel mills and beating the shit out of each other, we spend more time focusing on sculpting our bodies in fragrant spa like gyms and obsessing over our complexions.
What the fuck is wrong with society? Jesus titty fucking christ. If guys wanna bitch out I have no problem with that. I personally have no greivances over what parts of my being are male both physically and emotionally. I'm not gonna let a buncha tech loving cosmetic capitalist whores of men get all business on my ass and turn me into some kinda bitch. It is nice to see more and more women becoming less useless on the flip side. I'm all for equality especially when they stop whining about us not holding the freakin door, payin for dinner and telling them how great they look every 10 seconds.
