I was gonna make this favourite album of 2G + page, but let’s include movies and stuff too. I think aim to come up with an album and a movie, at least.
The idea is what’s your favourite album of (page 1) 2G1, then of (once we’re on page 2) 2G2, etc? We can discuss and argue that year until we get to the next page.
I dunno what happens if we catch up to current times. Maybe we’ll find out.
So, for starters, 2G1. I haven’t thought of answers yet, but go ahead.
EDIT: Oh yeah, video games! Guess we should include those too.

GTA3 and MGS2 are both 2G1 games I really enjoyed, though I played them both somewhat later (especially MGS2, as part of my summer of MGS where I played them all for the first time sometime after 4 came out).
Oh and Ico! Also didn’t play that till after SOTC but it’s great.
Apparently their 2G1 show in Vancouver was flippin great too. I probably would have gone if I’d gotten into them with Kid A instead. Oh well, their 2G3 show was still great and Michael Stipe was there (rofl) and I was near the front.
Oh I was huge into Lateralus by Tool which also came out in 2G1. Can’t say I’ve listened to Tool much for years, but I still think they’re good. At the very least that 2G1-and-earlier stuff.
We’re gonna have to lift this thread somehow, if we’re gonna make it to a second page.
2G1 was the year that I went to Canada and met Fei. The main film I remember if The Spirits Within. That isn’t my favourite

Their drummer might be a fascist
I wish I were joking and I’m not
But I can’t find the picture anymore because no one cares about tool

So some films I liked from 2G1 are Monsters, Inc., Donnie Darko, Spirited Away and Pocket Monsters the Movie: Celebi A Timeless Encounter. I didn’t see the 2 animu films until at least 2002 though. Saw a lot of shit in the cinema in 2G1, including quite a few while in Canada (Planet of the Apes, Spirits Within, Jurassic Park III...).
Donnie Darko is good. Less so the director’s cut, though, and apparently the director’s later films are bad. So I think DD was a bit of a happy fluke. But still good!
I got the directors cut free with a Sunday paper back in like 2006 and stuck it in the dvd box along with my normal copy. Never watched it though. What does it fuck up?
It sort of overexplains the weird shit that’s happening—or tries to, but of course it’s just philosophy-pseudo-science gobbledygook. The level of vagueness in the original cut works much better. Leaves the right amount to the imagination.
They partly do this by inserting title cards periodically with pages from the book that old lady was supposed to have written (The Philosophy of Time Travel or something?). And besides the content being lame, those title cards are interspersed with the other title cards that say the date, or number of days until the end of the world, or whatever. Having two sets of title cards running in parallel just feels clumsy.
The pacing is also just better in the original. Some scenes run too long in the director’s cut. And the book content stuff would be better as a DVD special feature (that I could ignore) than as part of the actual film.
Yeah. I liked Donnie Darko less after watching the extra stuff that explained what was actually going on. It just sounded stupid to me and I preferred my own interpretation from when it was left vague.
Funnily enough, the Pokémon film on my 2G1 got some extra animation put into it for the English language release, for the benefit of idiots. In the film, the characters are sent back in time and if you’re at all paying attention, you realise that the boy they befriend is a young professor Oak. In the English version, they put in a bit at the end where Oak’s in his lab, sorting through his old shit and brings out some stuff from the story and says “feels like it was just yesterday”. Wouldn’t say it ruins the film, but it alters the nuance. That’s a fucking Pokémon film, so I’d imagine it’d destroy something like Donnie Darko.
Whether it’s sci-fi horror or Pokémon, there is a satisfaction to having your intelligence and imagination respected as a viewer.
And in the case of something like Donnie Darko, I think the creator just had a kind of flaky idea that happened to work really well when less of his flakiness could be seen.
Hmmm.
Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, Pokémon Crystal, Capcom Vs SNK 2, Guitarioo Man and Smash Bros Melee would hve my shortlist.
Would you go with Ico?

I didn’t get GTA3 until after I had Vice City, but I was really excited when I first saw it (at eightman’s place I think) because it was the game I had envisioned years earlier when someone described the original GTA to me. I was somewhat let down when I saw the actual original GTA.
I totally hadn’t noticed that you made an earlier game post btw
I didn’t like GTA3 and didn’t own a PS2 when Vice City came out. It was only when I rented and liked San Andreas that I bought that and went back to play Vice. I did enjoy the first 2 GTAs though.
Vice City and San Andreas are both better than GTA3, which feels sort of like a prototype for those games. But I will give it credit for being a prototype for those games.
Every GTA game I've played (I think 3 of them), I dick around with cars and punching people and stuff. Problem is it always ends the same way with cops sending me to the hospital. I try to do different things to make it more fun but typical winds up with same result. So I get bored with that quickly. So then I try some missions, but I don't like them much to begin with and then I generally wind up finding one that's hard too soon and that's it for me. I think I got further in GTA 4 than any other but I can still hardly remember anything about it. Don't think I'll bother trying the same with 5 or any future entry.
I can’t remember if I beat GTA4, but I finished GTA5 and really liked it. Not enough to stick around for GTA o line or buy it again on the next Gen consoles though.
It didn’t change the formula that much. You can switch between characters, and that is handled surprisingly well both out-of-mission and in-mission, but otherwise it’s basically GTA as you know it.
