2G18 - 1: New year's resolutions
2G18 is just starting but it already seems like it's going to be a good year.
[Editor's note: "a good year" = "no worse than last year".]
Have you made any plans for 2G18? If so, what are they?

Because Q1 is critical to our operations. If we don't make enough money then, I might not have a job after Q2. In that case, work/life balance would be difficult to achieve in Q3 and Q4. Whereas if I do well enough in Q1 and Q2, I can just sit back and relax for the next 6 months.smeared ink wrote:Cal, why does work/life balance have to wait for Q2, specifically? The workiness of referring to the year in quarters is already concerning.

Fair enough! Maybe we should have a quarterly check-in anyway.
For me:
- Become comfortable speaking French. This one's a long time coming. I've been at the same not-terrible-but-can't-really-converse level for years.
- Learn at least 6 French songs, able to sing/play from memory, including understanding the lyrics. (I'm starting with "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille" by Jacques Dutronc.)
- Develop some musical fluency on guitar. If I hear some sequence of notes, I want to have an intuitive sense of "that's a semitone" or "that's a fifth", etc., and to be able to apply that to the guitar fretboard.
- Read a book every day. Not a whole book--just read, from a book.
And to continue last year's themes, practice mindfulness, take responsibility, and be assertive. These ones are vague; I need to think of how to make them more concrete.

But if you wait until Q2 to be active here, it's gonna be harder for me to meet my page 666 prophecy goals.Calbrena wrote:Because Q1 is critical to our operations. Sorry about prophecy 666, I probably won't have the time to contribute enough by Fei's birthday.

Let me know if I can help with the French, I'd be happy to do so.
If you want to kill two birds with one stone, I can suggest a couple of neat books to read in French, or music-related things.
Speaking of reading every day from a book, this is also something I'm trying to improve on, although a daily goal isn't realistic for me at the moment. Yesterday I read a bit from this book and thought it would make a good hot topic deskushion in the future:
https://books.google.com/books?id=BLNqH ... &q&f=false
I'm planning to start chapter 1.3 later tonight, or on Thursday. Tomorrow I'm working from 9am to 9pm so no time for leisurely reading.
See you later this week guys.
Mindfulness is also on my to-do list. Assertiveness is something I've been working on in 2017, and I guess taking responsibility too?smeared ink wrote:Fair enough! Maybe we should have a quarterly check-in anyway.

I will let you know if I could use your help with French, thanks!
Really though, I live in the second-largest French-speaking city in the world; there are millions of opportunities to practice.
I did successfully learn to play/sing "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille" from memory! Just need someone to play the flute part.

I don't really "do" New Year's resolutions, typically. I think waiting for an arbitrary time to start shit is silly.
I do have some things on the backburner that need attention, but I'm not in the headspace to commit to things right now.
So for now I'll limit myself to - actually read my book club book before the book club meeting. I have the book. I may have read an entire 10 pages or something thus far! Meeting is in 19 days.
Probably the best approach is to make it part of my night time wind-down routine (ie: read in bed, but not after bed time). So uh, we'll see.
