Possibly the worst idea I've ever had.

So some of you may know bits and pieces of what Im going to tell here. Well, if you were SUPER paying attention to posts of mine.

Some of you may know I used to run a webcomic site. It started off as a Resident Evil Parody and then later I did a more serious main comic with varying degrees of bad artwork. Plus other random shit.

Here's a sample of a Suiko parody I did

Image

Anyway...in 2013 all progress on the site came to a halt as I lost my comp for basically a year. And even when I got it back my life was too busy to touch the site. Now years have passed. Im rusty as shit as far as drawing goes and Ive lost access to the site ftp.

BUT I want to come out of the dark and start updating again. But since Im rusty and since it's been so long...a different concept has been stewing in my head.

And here is where I overshare way too much.

I was thinking of making a comic blog about mental illness.

Ive basically been shying away from it publically because admitting you have a mental illness on the internet basically makes you a pariah and everyone thinks youre chris chan (that is his name right?) or a straight out liar or worse.

But mentally ill people have practically no voice and it sucks

So that's my shitty idea. A comic blog which is basically an insider's guide to being completely out of your god damn mind.

I don't think this sounds like a crazy idea. No need to share any more than you're comfortable with, but what sort of mental illness do you deal with?

A little while ago I read this really great comic blog about dealing with depression (there's also a part 2). I think it's a good format, and certainly in that case it really effectively communicated a lot that tends to be misunderstood.

Bipolar with OCD with something called schizo affective disorder.

Youd think it would be bipolar, but it's really the OCD and schizo affective that's really fucking me up.

Bipolar is a degenerative disease. The longer you live with it the worse it gets; it even sets you up to develop more disorders down the line. The longer youre not treated at all, (such as before youre properly diagnosed) some serious damage can happen pretty quickly and in the never treated ever scenario, your brain ends up swiss cheese.

Mara Wilson did a cracked article on ocd that I thought hit the nail right on the head, but if youre not willing to read that. I'll say that the media massively misrepresents it. It's probably more like a heroin addiction than the cute "I want my house clean" bs the media puts out.

And schizo affective is nebulous even to me. A lot of bleed over with the bipolar symptoms but basically I got diagnosed with this because bipolar with ocd just wasnt cutting it to quantify my chaotic thought processes.

Ill read that comic now

EDIT: Thanks Fei, I read both parts.

I'm glad you now have a diagnosis and can therefore do something about it. My parents are both psychiatrists, so I happen to have been surrounded by people suffering from mental illnesses all my life. It's obviously not your fault, and all you can do is try and live the best possible life.

Have you seen Infinitely Polar Bear?

Anyway, best of luck with your web comic! :)
I think it's important to share your experience on a subject which is so often misunderstood.

I think it's a good idea. There's still lots of trolls on the internet, obviously, but I don't think it's quite as troll dominated as turn of the century internet and I think it would be more feasible for a comic like that to carve out its niche these days without making you a pariah.

Also, still cooler than the Rune of Punishment, tbh. :p

Calbrena: First Ive heard of that movie. Looks interesting but Im guessing hulu and Netflix both dont have it

Lord Golbez: Right now I just gotta figure out how to get my site back under my control. Supposedly youre supposed to go ask for help in the ComicGenesis forum but the damn thing wont send my activation email for an account for some reason.

Also...I kinda lost all my tools. Flash, a scanner, a mouse even. Im thinking of getting a wacom tablet to draw on.

the old way I made the comics was I would draw on some non notebook paper, scan it in, and then redraw over that image in flash while rearranging and tweaking it and weeding out all the side effects of the flash program best I could.

Supposedly with the wacom tablet I could bypass most steps and just draw it one time instead of basically doing a comic artists job and an inker's job.

It's just Ive never seen one of these wacom things in the flesh and dont know what to expect

IPad pros also have a useful stylus thingie, and I've seen some windows tablets that seemed to be pretty good for digital drawing too.

Mark Ruffalo is pretty good in IPB. The film is fairly recent, but it might already be available as a YouTube or Amazon rental?

Wacom tablets take some getting used to. The RDM got the cheapest one possible a ways back when he thought he had time to develop a webcomic (spoiler alert: he did not have time). After a bit of practice the motion becomes pretty natural.

Really? Strange pricing. @_@

I watched it on a plane back in 2015, so I didn't realise there wasn't really any cheap options to watch it. =/

You asked about a physical copy? The RDM is bad at reading, apparently.

I say go for it. Sure, there are a-holes on the internet, but that'll happen anywhere. If you have a potential outlet to address/look at your situation in a way that might help you, excellent. If you might help others along the way, even better. Hell, you might help someone in the first steps in diagnosing that they have a mental illness that can be treated.

If I do this thing it looks like it wont be on my old site. Im pretty much locked out. Looks like Comic Genesis died during my downtime.

Perhaps I'll post some comics in this thread. See how that goes.
