Help with computer

Post by Garbo »

Not sure where else to turn. I bought my computer about 3.5 years ago, but it seems like it should still run things pretty well.

CPU is Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

RAM is 6GB

Video card is nvidia 8800GT, 512MB.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 onto a 1.5 TB Western Digital SATA II Hard Drive. For some reason, it's incredibly laggy. When I click on Firefox, it takes a minute to open, and every 10 seconds, the computer freezes for about 10 seconds, then starts moving again. It's really annoying. Is there something that would cause this?

I haven't, no. I'll give that a try. Although it shouldn't be, because this HD is only about a year old. It does seem like a possibility though, because downloads are sometimes slow, and transfer between hard drives is a bit slow too.

But, I didn't format the hard drive when I made a fresh install; I have XP on another drive, and this one was purely for storage. I've used up about 1.1 terabyte out of the 1.35 technically on the drive; would this have anything to do with lag, maybe indexing or something?

It's not fragmented.

Probably not, unless the access rate is exceedingly slow. What are you WEI subscores? That could point you in the direction of the bottleneck. Also check if the spooler service is going hog on your CPU, phantom print jobs destroy computers.
