THE Poll

Post by Doom »

--- The Basic Idea

Here: http://www.squarerealm.com/doom/anime.xls

I am compiling an overall list of favorite anime from different communities just to see how anime stacks up amongst ourselves. These can be TV series, OVAs, or movies, complete or incomplete. This is to see if peole here would be interested as well.

That link represents the list so far, taken only from SG samples. This is all updated very easily, and you can mess around with the spreadsheet to see how exactly I calculate stuff. I was thinking of taking data separately for each community. Then, when I have enough entries, I'll make one huge combined table (trust me when I say it's easier to do it this way). If, for some reason, you don't have Excel, go help yourself at http://www.openoffice.org/

So for submissions, please give me a list of 10 and only 10 titles, ranked from 1-10. To give a little leeway to the more indecisive, I'm permitting one and only one tie, but you still can only have ten titles total. So a list with a tie might look like this:

1. A
2. B
3. C (tie)
3. D (tie)
5. E
6. F
7. G
8. H
9. I
10. J

As far as what distinct titles are, I'll make the final call on that, but I've already lumped some things together, as you can see from the spreadsheet (Eva, Wolf's Rain, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) in terms of continuity, as well as alternate versions of the same thing which aren't really different enough from one another (Macross Plus OVA and movie).

Anyway, you don't HAVE to give me a list of 10. You can give me a top five, a top seven or even just your favorite of all-time if you want. If not, whatever. I just thought it'd be a fun way to see what we collectively think of anime.

--- Updating

I'll be updating this on a regular basis. Anyone at anytime can feel free to change his/her personal list (but please, be honest... this isn't a popularity contest, just a poll), but I'd prefer if you put thought into your first submission. Regardless, if you want me to change something, please put it in a new reply and state explicitly what you want me to change... don't edit your list and make me go hunting for it.

--- Reminder

This list should be your favorites, and this compiled list is to see what the overall favorites are. This has nothing to do with the "best" (though of course that will factor into your personal decision). And please answer honestly...

--- Logistics (sticking this at the end for those of you who actually want it spelled out)

Those of you curious about logistics might be wondering as to how the rankings will be done. I'll take a number of stats, but I think the overall ranking could go something like this:

Every person ranks something 1-10 (or 1-whatever). 1 will get 10 rating points, 2 will get 9 points, etc. You can even give me one and only one tie, and I'll weigh them equally (e.g. tied for second = both of them get 9). Then I take a straight mean of everyone's rankings (e.g. if, say, Juuni Kokki gets ranked 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 from six people, then it'll get 10 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 4 + 1 = 36 points, or a mean of 6.0). I then divide that mean by the highest mean so far (let's say it's FMA with 7.5) and multiply by 50. Then I count the number of times it was nominated (in our example, six) and divide that by the largest number of nominations for any single title (let's say FMA, again, was ranked by 15 different people) and again multiply by 50. Then I add the terms together, giving me a rating out of 100. So for our example, JK:

(6.0/7.5)*50 + (6/15)*50 = 60

To generalize,

R = (A/B)*50 + (C/D)*50, where
R = overall rating
A = strict arithmetic mean
B = highest A among all titles
C = number of times the title was listed
D = number of times the most popular title was listed

Therefore the overall rating depends as much on pure ranking as it does on overall popularity amongst everyone. That having been said, if anyone wants to come up with a better way of doing it, be my guest. At first I wanted to use the Bayesian system that ANN uses, but... I think the sample size is relatively small in this case.

Isn't it a lot of work to keep dividing by the highest mean so far at the beginning? But it looks pretty good to me.

I would argue that Macross Plus OVA and movie are different, but that's neither here nor there. Now give me time to think of a serious list that you'll all hate anyway.

=MAX(cell1,cell2) in Excel :E

Edit: I understand that, but is it significant enough that you'd feel the need to occupy two slots in your list with both versions? Why not just pick the one you prefer? This is a top 10 list, after all. :)

I'm voting for every anime I've ever seen.

1. RoD (movie? :?).

It may suck, but it's the only anime I've seen. So it wins by default. :boo :mz1

Bah I hate coming up with this list. But I suppose I'll try:

1) GTO (that was easy)
2) Hajime no Ippo (maybe?)
3) Gungrave
4) Full Metal Panic
5) Samurai Champloo
6) Vandread
7) Fruits Basket
8) Scrapped Princess
9) Full Metal Alchemist
10) Guu

FMA only ranks so low because Spoon has managed to kill my urge to watch it from all their delays.

Aside from that, the rest of that list was rather difficult to come up with, obviously the exception is GTO. I'm sure I'm missing a lot of other anime that should be up there on the list (Slam Dunk and Azumanga Daioh and Chobits come to mind) but I just can't get the feel for them right now (john likes Slam Dunk and Azumanga way too much), and I must've forgotten a bunch of series.

As much as Narutaru and Gilgamesh deserve to be on that list, I just don't think they fit the bill.

Re: THE Poll

Post by j0hn Ayanami »

The most difficult thing isn't coming up with the list. It's deciding what goes where. Actually.. coming up with the list is pretty hard. Right now I'm trying to gauge whether Here is Greenwood belongs on this list or not. My gut feeling is that it does, but there are better comedies (Azu) and drama (Maria) on the list already.

I'll have you note that I've eliminated things that I felt were much superior in manga form. Otherwise Hana Yori Dango, Kare Kano, Marmalade Boy, and Fruits Basket would all be on this list.

Actually, I'll make that proposal.. Doom, should the manga form be allowed? I think it should because it kills my top four favourite series of all time. I can't justify placing Kare Kano, Fruits Basket, or Marmalade Boy on this list at all because the animes were either incomplete or horrendous. Hana Yori Dango could go here, but the manga is far superior to the anime version - I put Slam Dunk on here in spite of this.

I'll just make two versions then. I really feel much stronger about the second one, I'll have you know, and I'm tempted just to scrap the without manga version. >_< Some of the scenes in Kare Kano/Fruits Basket are so powerful, but they don't mean much without the rest of the manga, and Marmalade Boy is just a far, far superior manga than anime.

Fixed version

1) Rurouni Kenshin OVA
2 tie) Rahxephon (Series)
2 tie) Kareshi Kanojyo no Jijou
4) Macross Plus (Movie)
5) Now and Then, Here and There
6) Tonari no Totoro
7) Azumanga Daioh
8) Slam Dunk
9) Galaxy Express 999
10) FLCL

I don't care, I've decided that based on the 26 episodes that are shown in Kare Kano, it certainly deserves the #2 slot. If not just for episode 4.

Honorable mention: Grave of the Fireflies, Condor Hero, Gunbuster, Here is Greenwood, Gundam Wing, Akira, Ghost in the Shell (Movie)

I understand, John, but I think this should be an evaluation of the anime alone... at least, that's my opinion. Of course manga counterparts usually bolster the anime versions, but then it's no longer a uniform context.

Also, you can't have 11. :p I grant you one tie, but you should only have 10 total.

And finally: CONDOR HERO :D

I could list others, but they would mostly simply be listed because I have not seen much else. Tylor is petty funny though......

That was a really tough call for me, but I had to take in everything. I'd say that OVA is the benchmark by what not only all sword fighting scenes, but all fight scenes in general are judged by. The animation is still top notch; the beautiful portrait that the OVA paints is just an amazing one, contrasting themes, the evolution of Kenshin, you see everything. It just isn't a "so that's how he got the scar" thing. This really, really matters. Not only that, but the music also sets the standard for scores; I've yet to hear a soundtrack, barring a bit of Rah's stuff and Maria-sama's that has the same kind of quality in music.

I'm also noticing a distinct lack of OVA series and movies. There's been what, four or five? Come on guys. AKIRA hasn't even been listed yet, and I was dying to put it on. Tonari no Totoro, Spirited Away, Mononoke Hime... all of these are genre-defining animes. :( It makes me sad they aren't really remembered.

I fixed it.

And shit... I forgot all about Irresponsible Captain Tylor. See what old age does to you?

This was really difficult for me. It was hard to leave off sentimental favourites like Maria-sama ga Miteru, Gunbuster, and Here is Greenwood, as well as Condor Hero. Yet I couldn't justify them being on the list, but they certainly deserve some attention.

Maybe one day we can expand the list to just have a complete rundown of every anime we can possible roll off. :D

So I'm assuming I have your OK to use the without manga list? And which one do you want to take out? :p

I'll have you know that Laputa, Mononoke, Honneamise, and Grave of the Fireflies are all like... JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST out of the top 10 for me. :( Of course they are all classics, and of course they best about 90% of the entries, but the bulk of anime for me has always been TV/OVA, so I guess it's a preferential thing. And, I guess to put it another way, you ALMOST put Akira on, but didn't. Right? ;)

Edit: gotcha.

Geh...Your excel spread sheet is dredging bad memories of myslef trying to recreate sine waves to form a representation of a voice samples.

Anyways, here is my top ten list.

1) Vision of Escaflowne
1) Kaliedo Star *note that this is tied with Escaflowne*
2) Fruits Basket
3) Record of Lodoss Wars OAV
4) Stellvia
5) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
6) Macross Plus
7) Air Master
8) City Hunter
9) Kare Kano
10) Gundam Seed

This list is subject to change and I think I will change some things as I'm trying to recall all the anime I've watched.

I figured this would have been your reply, as well as the reply of most of the people here. I suppose it depends on when you get into anime as well, as being in it for a while you would have only really been able to see the big movies and OVAs and had much more limited access to the TV shows. That's just how it was. I really loved Kite for so long because it was one of the better action animes that was released over here, long before I even started learning Japanese.

Golbez, Akira's music, animation, direction, and story were all amazingly groundbreaking for 1980. It literally blew open the doors for anime over here. That's undeniable.

Then I won't try to deny it, and simply say that it's also undeniable that I spent most of the time laughing through it. :p

Eh...I don't know why you would list every anime you've seen. Unless you consider them all good, why bother ranking cruddy ones? It makes the "top" designation of the list a misnomer.

Also, I hate to parse it like that but for the sake of context, pick a season of SAC (and City Hunter, if it wasn't all at once continuous). :(
I thought you said we could list one tie?
If you want me to specify a season for GitS and City Hunter than I choose GitS: 2nd Gig and City Hunter season 2. Unfortuantely, this decisions are kind of one sided as 2nd Gig hasn't finished airing and I've only seen bits and parts of season 3 to City Hunter.

But as for the tie, you can only have ten total, but two of those ten can be tied.

Edit: argh this is a headache... *thinks*

Okay, SAC can be separated because each half is effectively stand alone. What about City Hunter (since I wouldn't know)?

Can I make Trigun tied with itself 8 times?
SAC can be separated because each half is effectively stand alone.
OIC. Was that intentional? :E

Edit: argh this is a headache... *thinks*

Okay, SAC can be separated because each half is effectively stand alone. What about City Hunter (since I wouldn't know)?
If I can't have two 10's being tied than place Kaleido Star tied for second place. The City Hunter seasons are not directly tied into one another for story purposes but stuff that happened in the previous season does carry over to the next season but I wouldn't go as far as to say that you needed to see the previous seasons in order to make full sense of the later seasons. Again, if you need me to choose a season then I'll stick with what I've posted above.

Nonono, you can tie two for first, but you can't have more than ten titles in your list, which would mean that if your list holds, I would have to exclude Seed.

Pfft, it'd be in the top 20 at least. The only reason I backed Chobits up was because it got a late of undeserved hate, but I never claimed that it was in my top 10. Once upon a time it was, but I've since watched a lot of better series, but by no means does that detract from my enjoyment of Chobits. I just enjoyed those other 10 a little bit more.

Than just exclude Seed. Anyways, the list is subject to change and I'm not sure if this is the final list.

Spreadsheet updated. I'm thinking of putting up threads at WF and Source to suck more people in. I suppose I could mess around with Excel to create four different spreadsheets, three for each of the forums by themselves and one as a clumping together, but that'd be way too much trouble so I probably won't do that. :p I think I'll get a few more from here before putting it up elsewhere.

Friendly reminder: from now on, if you want to make changes, don't edit your original post, just make a new one.

This list is going to look kick-ass.

I hope you aren't just keeping the top 10 in there and compiling all of the data together :E
