It's Almost that time agian...
Hello,
I don't know how this is going to go considering i'm kind of a black sheep at SG but here is goes. The holidays are quickly approaching and I was kind of interested in knowing what you guys celebrate if anything. One thing for sure...big meals and good times will be had.

The only thing on my calendar for this month is Jewish New Year, and I'm not Jewish.
I still don't quite know what Thanksgiving is. All I've taken from American TV shows is that all the family sit down to a massive dinner which ends up in bickering and everyone agrees never to do it again... and it has something to do with stealing Indian land, I dunno.
I only really bother with Christmas to be honest.

++ for Pirate Day. Also Ninja Day in December.
I don't mind traditional stuff like Halloween/Undeads-are-cool-Day, and Xmas/Let's-celebrate-Life-in-the-middle-of-Winter-by-doubling-our-electricity-bill-and-cutting-down-innocent-trees-and-cramming-tons-of-food-down-our-belly-while-little-kids-are-starving-in-Africa Day.
We normally don't do Thanksgiving here in Old Europe, but I may make an exception if it happens to fit in my schedule of randomly picking up and celebrating "ethnic"/exotic holidays (e.g. Dewali, Chinese New Year, etc.)

Hi Entr0pi3.
Don't get me wrong, I love the basic[*] Yule/Xmas/Sol Invictus concept: having some lights shining bright in the dead of the long Winter night, showing of evergreen plants when all the nature around looks dead, and gathering with your peers around an abundance of food while singing cheerful songs and exchanging token gifts, all these are very strong symbols of hope (+ a nice sense of community) at a time of the year when it's certainly much needed (winter depression
[*] The purely Christian version is not bad, either, but more "controversial" - the Nativity is a cool story, but not everybody believes in JC, while most people can believe in the virtue of lighting up a fire when it's cold and dark outside, and inviting your tribe to share a nice meal to fight off the gloom
But I do get a feeling the original symbols tend to get a bit lost behind all the buying frenzy (and related stress) nowadays associated with the "Winter Holiday Season" (crazy consumerism
Ideally, Xmas should be a time to sit down and relax (heck, all holidays should, if you ask me
It makes me a bit
New Years - Usually have 20 - 30 people over at my home to celebrate the new year. Had one year where it somehow balooned up to about 80 people, and I don't think I even knew half of the people there. I guess some people were a friend of a friend of a friend.
My birthday - A caek, a song, and then gift cards.
St. Patricks Day - Have a beer or two. That's about it.
Easter - Don't really celebrate that one. I never remember what it is.
4th of july- Light some fireworks and all that. Pretty colors, damaged vision.
Halloween - I usually have parties for this one. 10 years running...expensive.
Thanksgiving- Pretty traditional. Turkey, stuffing, pies, all those tasty side dishes. Ofcourse there's also the whole drinking and getting angry at ones family members for no reason.
Christmas - Hang some lights on the house, go cut down a tree that doesn't deserve to live, put some lights on it, open some presents. Nothing all that special.

I am so excited for the holidays because I'm a huge holiday dork. In fact I'm way happy today because it actually kind of feels like autumn in San Diego for a change, so I got my pumpkin spice latte and I'm feeling like the holidays are coming. Halloween... I didn't do much for it last year but I think I might take a Vegas road trip for it this year. Thanksgiving I don't get to go home which is kind of sad but I'm thinking of going to the Grand Canyon for no real reason other than I can. Then I get to take off two weeks during Christmas/New Years and go home.
After that everything goes downhill because I get really busy at work and there are no fun holidays (though my bday is at the end of January).
