Leftover's thinking makes sense.
It's like saying I don't think FMA is the best anime, but its definitely my most favorite one. Ever.

Well this is how I look at it.
You have those shows you love watching, but that has its obvious flaws. Hell, not so much flaws to be pointed out, but differences in taste. That's your personal favorite.
Then you have those shows that are bar none really damn good, something that just takes everything that makes anime such a joy to watch, and goes beyond excelling at it. Those type of shows were very, very, VERY few people can be found speaking negatively about it.
I love watching Urusei Yatsura. I really love watching it. I can't put into words how much I love watching it. It's my favorite series. I could watch it for days. I can never get sick of it.
Escaflowne on the other hand, is the best anime I've ever seen, and thus the best done. All its pieces connect effortlessly, and it just flows from start to finish with nary a bump in the road, practically perfection. Hence, it is the best anime I've seen. I'm in awe every time I decide to watch it again (epsiode 14
).
So one (UY) appeals to my personal tastes, but not really factoring general appeal, whilst the other (Esca) takes part of general appeal and personal tastes.

Nah, everyone just kept ranting and ranting about it... and it just happened to be one of the only things on the ftp that i didnt have/was remotely interested in anime-wise.Vibing_V wrote:One Piece?! More reasons to hate on vibes
Anyway, stellvia sux :]
I hate how every episode of fma feels like 2 minutes instead of 20, even though I never really look forward to watching an episode, it just goes too damn fast.
ERGH BEST STUFF
I CAN'T REMEMBER ANYMORE
Best anime
1. GTO
2-5 -> FMP, Gungrave, Hajime no Ippo, Fruits Basket
In no particular order, I don't have one anymore.
Absolute best manga read
1. 20th Century Boys
2. Death Note
3-5 -> Hikaru no Go, Yakitate Japan, Happy, I"s.
It's considerably more difficult for manga because there's just so many titles which make you want to ejaculate. I'd throw in Doraemon into the final 3-5 mix as well, but I don't suppose I feel like it. I also excluded Berserk because as good as it is, it's far too traumatising.

Making a top 5 is difficult
But I agree with LoR, for me my fav anime probably wouldn't be the one I consider as the best one objectively.
Though at the moment I have no idea which one would be number 1 for me in either category
Well, let's see...
Best anime serie evar: hmm, maybe Nadia? Though Esca would definitely in the top 5 as well... And Eva...
Fav anime serie evar: now that's a difficult one... For me it would probably have to be something from my childhood, because of all the memories... So something old skool anyway... So it would be a completely biased and irrational choice anyway

Mikey and I get along so well because our general taste in anime are very similar. Of course it helps that Escaflowne is our top anime but my personal favorite and best done anime coincide with each other. I'm not as big of a Rumiko Takahashi fan as he is though.
You've reminded me that I needed to download the One Piece anime but I just might wait for the DVD releases. Plus, I have no harddrive at the moment to be starting anything really new.
Personal Favorite animes:
1) Escaflowne
2) Kaleido Star (though I'm contemplating if this would be tied with Escaflowne)
3) Fruits Basket
4) Stellvia
5) Air Master

No, it's the best to me, and I'll argue every single one of them if you make meCalbrena wrote:That's not the best, these are just your favs![]()
imo Slam Dunk is good, but it's nothing that special, so it doesn't deserve to be 1st...
And personnally I would put MI in the top5 mangas, not animes
I've never read the Maison Ikkoku manga, so I put it in anime.
Re: Anime Pub Thread v.503
1) Escaflowne
1.5) Kaleido Star
2) Fruits Basket
That's it for now.

Escaflowne will never be in my top 30 anime even. It sucks >:|

OMG LIST TIEM!1!!1

Okay well, for something as elite as the top 5, my favorites and the ones I think are the "best" coincide, those being
TV
1. Bebop
t-2. RX
t-2. Escaflowne
4. Eva
5. NTHT
OVA
1. Kenshin 1
2. FLCL
3. Macross Plus
4. Macross Zero
5. Read or Die
though those do not collectively make up my best/favorite 10 TV/OVA (the last two OVAs would be knocked off in favor of GTO and GitS SAC for best, GTO and Fumoffu for favorite).
I haven't seen too many (stand alone) movies so I won't rank those; the ones I have seen are half Ghibli anyway.
Of course I think something like a top 5 is WAY too unfair to the multitude of great shows out there. It'd be a lot easier for me to make something like a top 50, unranked (I wonder if I've broken 100 series/OVA watched...)
Oh yeah, manga (and here it makes a difference):
Edit: eh, I don't think I'm qualified enough to rank manga, so I'll throw out my best list.
Favorites in no particular order:
I"s, 20th Century Boys, Death Note, Touch, H2, Monster, Yakitate, Maison Ikkoku, Blame, Gantz, KOR

Well, simply because it is the most polished anime I have ever seen. I can hardly find a single thing wrong with it in terms of presentation. It's lacking a sequential story, but not a big picture. I think it's very obvious that the show sets out to focus on the nuances of the setting and the quirks of the characters, and I can appreciate it for that, as well as the eye-popping (for its time) visuals, the overarching homage to westernization, the eclectic music which fits perfectly - and of course this is purely subjective (LoR thinks the music is horribly unfitting in the show, for example) - and its rewatchability (making up words is fun). I don't really think that I'm offering any new arguments, but there you have it.

There are so many good things about Bebop, and as Doom said it has like it's rewatchability. You can watch Bebop over and over and never bored because the episodes are ova style: they all SEEM random if you're a nub, but each and every Bebop eps is fun and tells you more about the Bebop universe. Which makes it really, the most fun to watch anime tv series I have ever seen. I first saw Bebop 3 years ago and I still watch it occasionally. I saw Kenshin ova 1 5 years ago and I STILL watch it atleast monthly.
If something is on my list, usually it means I can watch it OVER AND OVER and never get bored. FLCL is another. Since it's only 6 eps, I can watch all of that like in 2 hours. And it's easily one of the best anime's ever. It's just pure fun to watch.
Actually, ovas in general are more fun to watch than tv series. OVAS own me.

ok, I see your point, but surely the same thing could be said about other mangas?j0hn Ayanami wrote:No, it's the best to me, and I'll argue every single one of them if you make meSlam Dunk is one of those rare mangas that not only has everyone heard about and read, but one that has truly changed a culture. That's the impression I get when I talk to my Japanese friends about it - not only was it well-written, exciting, dramatic, funny, but it was also responsible for helping basketball (and, in a larger sense, more American and African-American culture) to be imported into Japan.
About promoting a new foreign sport for example, Captain Tsubasa did just the same, as far as I know anyway... (and it did even more, CT is the reason why France won in 98!
Though Slam Dunk is really special, with so many charismatic characters (Rukawa
btw,
EDIT: Oh, and Garbo needs to die...
From episodes 3 to 11, there are separate story arcs that don't have anything to do with each other, but do play into the big picture, which becomes infinitely clearer when you watch the arc that goes from 12-14.Joei wrote:I'm watching MoO, and I hate how it jumps ahead, skipping things and confusing me.
Re: Anime Pub Thread v.503
I acknowledge the superb style and execution Bebop has, but what I had the most interest is what they spent the somewhat least amount of time in, that being the characters. I didn't care for the comatose hacker, the butch space trucker, the kid with the plant, nor Andy (it was a funny episode mind you) at all, in the slightest. I didn't want to know about the world they lived in, I wanted to know about Spike, Jet, and Faye.
Which brings up my sheer unrivaled magntitude of hate for Ed, who I did not find funny nor cute, nor worth the need to exist in any way, shape, or form. I mean that. She had her purpose, but I didn't like her, I really, really, really didn't like her (I hate her actually). Way too annoying, even as use of contrast against the rest of the cast.
When they got to their pasts though, Bebop was untouchable. Faye's past had me most intrigued, I felt rather sorry for her, especially since I disliked her for most fo the show.
I don't like the ending (Julia is my favorite character, believe it or not), I think the music fits much better OUTSIDE of the show, and I didn't like Pierrot Le Fou either, regardless of what type of homage it was supposed to be, but that doesn't keep it from being a damn good show.
It's usually #10 or #11 on my list though.
