2004 Year in Review: Because We Like Lists

Post by Doom »

Burned out too much of my brain already from compiling these lists... will defend/further justify my opinion later!

Note: I will say this, all qualifying shows are any TV/OVA series that aired/came out at some point during 2004, with a few exceptions, such as KGNE, which had only its last ep airing when 2004 rolled around.

I'll..erm...make my post later but my overall list for 2004:

1.Full Metal Alchemist (this landed into my top 5 anime when it ended, I think that says it all)
2. Gankutsuou (amazing art, direction, music, simply amazing)
3. Beck (great story that feels extremely realistic)
4. Paranoia Agent (fucking awesome and freaky, fucks with your head. Just awesome)
5. Yakitate!! Japan (my first cooking anime. I've never seen an anime involved in cooking so the concept is extremely fresh to me)
6. Monster (started out pretty good but gets fucking great by like episode 10 or so)
7. Re Cutie Honey (it's funny)
8. Elfen Lied (GORO and cat girls who's ear's are actually horns! Cool, pretty good show this season but not top 10 worthy)
9. Melody of Oblivion (seen 5 episodes, don't know much about the story but I'm catching up, it's been awhile since I've watched it so I'm rewatching it while getting more episodes)
10. Fafner (watched 8 episodes thus far, pretty cool so far)

Was Koi Kaze that bad or you just hated the incest concept? :? I've heard some good things about it though then again, it was those who didn't find anything wrong with sibling incest since it was a "cultural thing".

My top 10 (keep in mind I have not started Gankutsuou or GITS:2nd Gig)

1. Full Metal Alchemist
2. PlanetES
3. Elfen Lied
4. Macross Zero
5. Paranoia Agent
6. Gundam Seed Destiny
7. Melody of Oblivion
8. Genshiken
9. Mai Hime
10. Kaleido Star

Kannaduki No Miko gets honorable mention for having good music and a retardedly catchy opening though. :check

Series that might have been on it but have stopped following for one reason or another: Samurai 7, Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Yakitate!! Japan, Monster

And top 5 series seen this year:
1. GITS:SAC
2. Now and Then, Here and There
3. Infinite Ryvius
4. Full Metal Alchemist
5. PlanetES (mostly attributed to the last scene in episode 25. Best cliffhanger ever by far)

Top 5 this year:
1. Fullmetal Alchemist (pure greatness)
2. Paranoia Agent (personally, the ending was a little too messed up, but the trip was a blast)
3. Samurai Champloo (extremely interesting, with great potential. Does anyone know when its coming back exactly?)
4. Mai-Hime (Just really, really fun to watch.)
5. Beck (I love the manga, barely gone through the 2nd episode, but I'm sure it's great)
Changing this sig after 9+ years.

Ah, I guess I'll have to exclude Macross Zero (since I totally forgot about it :E).

And yes, I was just more or less disgusted by Koi Kaze. I have no idea in hell why it would get licensed (and it was, before it started airing). As it is, I'll remind everyone that, save for the technical categories (animation/art, and, to a grayer extent, music/OP/ED, story, and entertainment), everything I rank is completely subjective.

I was under the impression that when someone makes a list on his own there would be a lot of subjective opinions that accompany it.

So, why make my own list when I can just complain about Dooms? Art and Animation seem good, but it needs some Innocence & Zero near the top. I’m too lazy to pull out some of my burnt disks to check out openings and endings. When it comes to story Beck and PlanetES should’ve been on the list. Yay for Gungrave and it’s awesome ending.

In the end, best of list…

1. Beck
2. Gankutsuou
3. FMA
4. PlanetES
5. Gungrave
6. GitS: Innocence
7. Paranoia Agent
8. Macross Zero
9. Monster

Number one thing I need to watch…
1. GitS; SAC 2nd Gig
