Topic 003: Rules for this forum

Post by Reiji »

Back in S7, I refrained from making executive decisions and encouraged the ACID class to vote and give their input on what should be implemented. That being said, I suggest that we should vote on the rules for this forum because you, the posters, are the lifeblood here.

In previous SG TotDs, we've had the one post rule, where a poster is only allowed to post once per TotD thread.

In staff discussion, I suggested the Three Post Rule I've seen used in other forums.

The gist of it is, if ya haven't convinced them by post #3, you're never gonna convince 'em.

The rule by itself is to prevent people from repeating the same arguments and discourage those posters who won't back down until they've asserted that they're absolutely right.

These are the current rules, which add debate guidelines:
1) One user will be able to post three times per thread, no more.
2) The first post will be a reply to the topic and only that.
3) The second and third posts can be rebuttals to as many people as you would like.
So should we have a formal debate form suggested by rules 2 and 3, just keep a three-post limit with no other restrictions, or go back to a one-post limit?

I'm in favor of the Three post limit with no formal debate.

Personally, I dont like limiting the input someone can give to a topic at all. BUT, since it is true that there are many who'd keep posting and posting until people accept their point (or just get sick of having to fight), the three post limit + no formal debate sounds like the best solution to me.

oooooooh them friendly mods are at it!

I like the 3 post rule and I'm all for it. It definitely encourages people to give more in their replies. And that's pretty necessary for totd since it's a more serious forum. :check

I think it's pretty stupid to insist on replying to the first post as your first post, because if people have a rebuttal they want to make upon reading this thread, then they're faced with first having to write a halfassed first post, which means that the board is likely going to be filled with halfassed first posts replying to the first post.

I think at least the first post someone makes in a topic of the day thread should be a comment or two about the actual topic. You need to at least provide some opinion on that and not just use it as a place to flame other people.

As far as the other two posts, I just said they can be rebuttals and debates just because we don't want spam in there, and I don't think anyone would post something on the topic twice.

I actually agree with Garbo on this. The rule that the first post of every person to be on the first post exclusively makes the situation awkward. I agree there should be some reply to the first post, but it need not take up the entire post. If one already has something to respond to in the thread, it would be silly to encourage double posting (or waiting for someone else to reply in between, which amounts to the same thing except in appearance) by requiring that the post respond to the topic exclusively.

What others said: three posts, no content restrictions, except for blatant spam which will be deleted.

To clarify a bit further and revise.

Listening to what you guys are saying, generally what I think is this. The first post you make SHOULD have some reply to the topic post, but it doesn't have to just include that - it can also include rebuttals.

I see no problem with the rules, as long as someone has the option to create a similar thread in GC/GS/whatever if they wish to discuss the topic further, without someone going "omfg gb2TotD"

I call BS. :ruroken :E

As far as the topic goes, I like it the way it is. If the debate gets remotely heated, it leaves out the personal stuff aside, which is always a big plus in the Big Ward Book of Posting TM.

I am all in favor of the three post limitations and agree that the first post should not be restricted merely answering the first post. This TotD tends to make my mind spin. I also notice that these days my post is getting longer. I am losing my sense of brevity and that is no good. :E

I dont quite like the idea of limiting the input one can put on a particular topic, Of course one should put all the input they have in the initial post but there will always be exceptions and changed minds to a certain point/arguement/whatever and I just dont come to like the idea that just because they have posted three times, They have cannot involve themselves further in the matter.

My opinion: Good concept, Bad representation.

I think that 3 posts is plenty, considering how (relatively) short the topic of the DAY is around, and it simply means that rather than complusively refreshing to reply each time someone else posts, you might have to condense multiple rebuttals into one response. Hell, odds are good several people said close to the same things anyways.

I always thought it started as Topic of the Week! :! And became "Hot Topics" when we realized weekly wasn't happening anymore.

There was clearly a daily phase before that. Looks like the threads were regularly deleted as well.
