Rabbit & Bear Studios, a Tokyo-based studio formed by key creators of the Suikoden series, has announced Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, an ambitious new RPG planned for release in fall 2022. A Kickstarter campaign seeking $500,000 USD in funding for a PC release—with a single stretch goal to unlock PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Switch versions (or next-gen Switch, if one is available)—will run from July 27 at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET to August 28. A trailer will also debut when the campaign launches.

The art looks good and Suikoden like. The pictures of gameplay screens look like shitty phone game stuff. It definitely has the potential to be good with Suikoden creators involved, but one of my biggest issues with the Suikoden series dying is that story will never be completed. No spiritual successor can solve that.

Um....Suikoden 5 was probably the second best. Suikoden 4 was easily and far and away the worst. Why are you lumping them together?
It would be a great surprise if it were better than Suikoden 5, and I'd happily settle for better than the first one and 4. It won't be better than Suikoden 2, I can easily and emphatically say that. Suikoden 2 is one of the greatest games of all time. It's extremely rare to see anything on par with it, and assuming that a game is "probably" going to be as good as or better than it is like expecting lightning to strike twice in the same place.

The story mattered at least until 3 in terms of continuity by the way and to some lesser degree in 4 and 5 due to recurring characters. But mostly it's the fact that there were recurring plot threads/myteries throughout that were never resolved including what the deal is with Yuber and Pemerga, Jeane, and Viki. In term of overarching story, they were definitely building to some conflict involving Harmonia, but Harmonia never featured as a location you could travel to in any of the games and there's the whole mystery of the Sindar civilization.

I don't do kickstart anyway on principal. If the only thing I'm getting for investing is the game or some merch like that, don't make me pay more than retail. If you want actual investments, treat me like an actual investor.
As far as whether I'd buy the game or not, it's just too early to say. They would do better to match the graphical style of the first two games over using shitty mobile game looking sprites though.

It easily reached its goal and i'm sure i'll get it when it comes out but I don't care all that much.
The only thing bad about Suikoden 5 really was the load times. I can see how that would sour ones impressions of the game. The guy at Konami who helped get the other 4 games re-released on PSN said there was a reason he couldn't go into as to why its unlikely 5 would get re-released. Wonder what that is? I would have liked it with improved loading times as its the only Suikoden I played through once and never again.

Fuck everything about Suikoden IV. That's the only one I haven't played through more than once and I made damn sure to get all 108 stars first time through (I usually don't and just get whichever stars I find first time) because I knew I wouldn't be playing it again.
