So, a month later and...this game has made me quit rpgs. I don't have the time nor the willpower to go through more bloated rpgs. I just don't care about story-based games anymore (unless they're Shenmue of course). Sucks that it took Persona 5 to realize that I would rather be actually playing a game than watching some long anime cutscene with zero input for two hours in my 30's. Oh well, all things come to an end. The RPG love fest is over. I'll still play a new FF or DQ when they come out though because those are the only two I still remotely enjoy and they're infrequent enough that I won't burn myself out.
Looking forward to Tekken 7 a lot. Looks hype and the competitive scene looks raw. Playing games you actually like is much better.
If your game has story as the focus (and you're not Shenmue) it's a pass from now on. I'll always cherish the memories though.
Thanks Persona 5!

How do you know you'll care about Shenmue (3)? IMO, the original Shenmue is the epitome of a story that goes nowhere and 2 was only marginally better. When was the last time you played Shenmue? More recently than the last Persona game you enjoyed?
And aren't Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games more frequent than Personas?

I play Shenmue I and II at least once a year and have done this for like 11 years. They are far and beyond my favorite games. Also, despite being story oriented, Shenmue games offer very little guidance, do not hold your hand, have very few cutscenes.Damien wrote:How do you know you'll care about Shenmue (3)? also II is not just marginally better. It's amazing.
How are FF and DQ more frequent than Persona?
Persona 4 release - 2008
DQ9 release - 2010
FF13 release - 2010
Persona 5 release - 2017
DQ11 release - 2017
FF15 release - 2016
They're at similar rates. If you mean side games, Persona had Persona Q and Dancing and two fighting games.
If you mean re-releases, sure. But I'm not talking about re-releases. Given SE are just now hiring for FF7 remake I'm not expecting to play the next FF until 2025 minimum.

You skipped DQ10 and FF14, which, to be fair, I also would have done. Also, there's still a 2 year difference there. Plus, it might make more sense to judge over the length of the series rather than just the most recent interval. Even discounting both FF11 and FF14, FF has had 7 entries in the time Persona took to get 5. It does seem unreasonable to say DQ comes more frequently though.

Persona 4 was the definition of niche.
Sales as of 2009.
North America
Persona 4 (PS2) – 110,000 (150,000 expected)
Japan
Persona 4 (PS2) – 300,000 (180,000 expected)
By comparison, Persona 5 has sold 1.5 million. Persona 5 cracked the series into mainstream. Until then Persona and by extension, Megaten, were games a select number of rpg nerds played. Atlus only expected 150k units of P4 to be sold in NA. For the record, and to put numbers into perspective, the average successful jrpg in North America tops out at 200k units and rarely, if ever, breaks out of that pool. Only a select few do, and they're the big boys and girls aka FF, Pokemon, KH. It's possible Persona 4 got sales over its lifetime and cracked into 200k. I don't know and I'm not interested on researching much but the data is probably out there. The point is, Atlus still expected a lifetime sale far below the niche jrpg sales ceiling of 200k in North America for Persona 4. Ergo, Persona 4 was niche.
It's partly why the success of recent formerly niche jrpgs is so shocking. If you told me Persona 5 sold 1.5 million or that Nier's sequel was selling millions of units or that Fire Emblem became mainstream five years ago I would have laughed into my grave.
We basically have an environment where Suikoden has a chance of success if Konami played their cards right. It's beyond shocking.

I should have been more specific. As of Persona 4 Golden, I don't think Persona was niche anymore. Persona 5 still sold considerably more, but the sales for Golden were more than double the expected for Persona 4 original. Whether PS2 version of Persona 4 cracked the 200k mark or not, Golden did significantly. To be fair though, anticipation over Persona 5 may have been responsible for a decent proportion of Golden sales.
The thing keeping Suikoden from success is Konami now. If they wanted to, they could be successful with it, but they'd rather do pachinko.

Depends on who you ask (don't even bother with Ward), but generally anything after Persona 2 is "one of the better ones" from my perspective. Not counting spinoffs like Persona Q, etc. However, I never finished Golden and have heard from some that the extra length kind of makes it drag toward the end.

Yes, Persona 4 and 5 both have long intros. Persona 4 possibly longer than 5 even. It doesn't remain like that throughout the game but it's a bit of a slog to get through.Cid wrote:So far I'm 2 1/2 hours into the game and I've actually controlled my character for maybe 10 minutes.

Haru is a bit of a forgettable character but not one of the reasons I took year+ breaks in my single playthrough. It was normally frustration with the palaces or general exhaustion. Even the ending dragged on more than it should have. Royal probably improves lots but I’m not sure I ever want to potentially invest another half decade in Persona 5
