Pretty frustrating. I plan on playing a little today, anyway.
Persona 5

The dungeons not being randomly generated is a great thing. Much prefer the gimmicks and the dungeons are relatively fun rather than being a hassle. Balancing dungeon crawling with social links / jobs has always been persona so not sure why you are shocked?????? Also as you progress you get a feel for how much time you will probably spend on a dungeon and know when to do it.HKK wrote:Hmm.
Couple things as I play more and get into the meat of the game.
Dungeon design - linear but interesting gimmicks. Nothing notable so far. Considering Atlus' penchant for excellent dungeon design, soemthing to look at as the game progresses.
Freedom - complete backstep from P3. In P3 you have multiple cycles through the day. While in 5 you are stuck with really one choice per day. This seems good at first because it makes things more tense. But then the next day you decide to go to the dungeon. In P3 you could prep. After school you have the choice of hanging out with an s link or going to a club or working a job or studying in the library. Right now in P5 I have items I want to sell for sweet cash to build up my compendium. Except I can't because by choosing "let's go to the dungeon today" it automatically goes to the rooftop and I can't do anything else that day. I can't prep and make choices. Combined with the fact that you can only do the dungeon after school and not in the evening like in P3/4 makes the game feels small and limited.
In P3 I made a literal calendar, in real life, for how I wanted to go through a week in that game. I can't do that in P5 and for this reason it's not as addictive. Less sim periods means less choice. The result is what appears to be a smaller, far more guided game. Right now with 12 days left until my deadline the only real choice is to beat the dungeon. Since there's only one real choice, it doesn't feel like a choice. This completely ruins the Persona 3 sim game structure because what makes it so fun is the balance between day (school) and night (dark hour). If you always have to choose between dungeoning and school, there is no balance and if there is no balance then the game loses its unique game structure and gameplay loop. Awful design.
Battles - very boring so far for a Megaten vet. So far the only silver lining is that sp healing items feel limited so I can't just beat the entire dungeon in one day.
Story and characters are great but the gameplay...I just don't know. Still fun, but it just feel limited to me. What were they thinking making you choose between doing the dungeon and studying/doing a part time job/s links? Bad design choice.

Um....don't choose "let's go to the dungeon today," just choose decide later. Unless that affects social link progress, but I doubt it. Also, I think you're wrong anyway, HKK. Even if you choose to go today, it will automatically take you to your meeting place, but you can still leave without advancing time until you select "infiltrate palace." Holding a meeting does not advance time and you can still go and sell stuff, by weapons, etc.
I do tend to agree the time is too limited but not because of the choices you have to make. In P4, going into the TV takes away both after school and evening activities, so it's pretty much the same (other than the occasional time spent at lunch, which never increases a rank). It's more because of how many mandatory days the freedom is taken from you. It seems to be getting better though.
Spoiler tagging this even though I don't really think it's a spoiler. I'm just discussing some logistics about time spent in the second and third palaces without getting into any specifics about those palaces:
The third palace can hypothetically be infiltrated in a day, unlike the second. I was darn close but just running too low on SP. Also, seems like I got more free time after the second palace and some story days before the third palace at least didn't take away evening activities.
Anyway, yes, ultimately both P3 and P4 have some more freedom than this, but I'd say it begins to open up more in June.

Persona has always been about that Joei? In p3, you have after school and you have evening. After school you can choose to do an s link or study in the library. You can't go to the dark hour after school. You must be thinking of weekends, where yes, you must make one choice. But that's just weekends.
Yes, having actual non random dungeons is great but not at the expense of choice.

Keep in mind that leveling up knowledge in P3 is insane. It takes a lot of your free time to do that. A lot. Consistently studying twice at night or going to trivia and studying for a long period of time. You never level up social stats during social links or other useful activities. The extra free time of P3 is largely necessitated by the system.
Also, I could be wrong but I could swear you can still do something else on the weekends at night in P3. At any rate, the weekends are only Sunday in Persona. Every other day is a school day.

The more I play the less I'm impressed.
Finished the first dungeon and it was really, really boring. By the end of it, I was counting the minutes for it to be over.
The story and characters are on point, but the gameplay - the main driver of SMT games - is really, really weak. The encounter design is poor and lacking variety. I was still killing Pixie's even at the end of the dungeon. Ambushes are too unbalanced on your end. Shadows are far easier to get an ambush on this game, making battles repetitive tedium. Doom is absolutely correct about Persona 5's battles at least. Battle difficulty is low, low, low. It almost reminds me of a Final Fantasy in that area. Dungeon design so far is extremely poor. The gimmicks (sneak thief stuff) are cool but little else. There's the occasional puzzle, but it's mostly just a gauntlet of battle after battle. Resource management, risk/reward, all elements that made SMT games great are absent here.
As it is, I love the non-dungeon stuff as it is. The stories and characters are great. But the battles, dungeon design, gameplay loop, are not SMT quality.
I'm actually disappointed. When I hope it'll get better the game puts you on rails and tells you can and can't do on endless days. We're going to go out and celebrate beating the first dungeon, but this means I can't study why exactly? That's tomorrow. Why can't I study today? Oh, because the cat won't let me go down stairs. What were they thinking? Again, the games limitation rears its ugly head.
So far, this is not on par with P3 or even P4 and its gameplay goes against everything that made me a Megaten fan in the first place.
I'm really hoping it gets better but right now I'm dealing with a cat tell me what I can and can't do.

How many hours have you played HKK? Probably a lot more than me.
I'm actually really enjoying the battle system, though I guess I like that I feel competent at it. Maybe that's because it's too easy, but I still feel its enjoyable. The days ticking by too quickly is an annoyance, but I guess that's part of the structure of the game and I'll eventually get to do everything I want to... hopefully.

Talk to me when you have put more hours into the game. It opens up more later. It's 100 hours and you have barely scratched the surface. I'm 40 hours in with 18 social links trying to balance everything.HKK wrote:The more I play the less I'm impressed.

It's hard for me to understand how you can praise the design of randomly generated dungeons while saying these dungeons are bad. Also, this is by no means Final Fantasy easy. Sure it's cakewalk compared to other SMT, but Persona always has been. Ambushes are by no means a foregone conclusion with some enemies far from hiding spots with other obstacles in the way. Sometimes enemies appear out of nowhere due to some trigger scarcely giving you a chance to hide. Furthermore a lack of ambush can be devastating because one more is a double edged sword an enemy with a full party attack that exploits a weakness or gets a critical on only one member can do that full party attack twice. I've been wiped out more than once because of things like that.

I never said anything about random dungeon design being good. By being random, they cannot possibly be designed in the first place. However, they do have tight corners leading to claustrophobia and making it kinda hard to always get an ambush on enemies whereas in P5 about 95 of my fights so far is by ambush, you cannot save unless you go to first floor forcing you to risk progress for safety (risk/reward), the appeal of climbing the tower bit by bit is addictive, the progression is better as well because the higher you get the more varied the shadows are and yet here I am fighting Incubus' and Pixie's 13 hours into the game. In hindsight, random dungeons are probably better for the P3 type of gameplay if only because the random generated gameplay leads to different outcomes on different nights.
When I talk about great dungeon design, I am clearly not talking about P3/4 but going through the Amala network in Nocturne, the dungeon crawling in DDS, Etrian Odyssey, SMT2;etc. SMT was originally a Wizardry clone. Dungeons literally ARE its lifeblood. That was the most boring SMT dungeon I've ever played in my life.
Persona 5 is all the flash, none of the substance. Perfect for everyone's first Persona. The only silver lining is that's just the first dungeon and there's potential for improvement. Even still, in terms of design, it is easily the most boring dungeon I've ever played in the series. Comparing it to SMTIV's opening dungeon isn't even fair.

SMTIV first dungeon is nothing notable at all, but it's a fun dungeon.Lord Golbez wrote:Whaaaaat?! You obviously have very different taste in dungeon design because I recall nothing remarkable about SMT IV in that department.
Also I can almost always get ambushes in P3 as well. As I best recall, there's only one subsection where it's kind of hard.

Yes, this is what I was complaining about last week. It's better after the second palace, trust me. For one thing, the cat doesn't always make you go to sleep in the evening when there are story sequences after the second palace (sometimes, but not always which seemed to be the case after the first palace).HKK wrote:15 or so hours now in May. On SMT IV. I mean, I guess it's alright. The press turn system is generally kind of fun, but I vastly prefer Persona gameplay over mainline SMT gameplay, so to me this is better.

Persona 3 is probably my favorite RPG and is definitely my favorite SMT game. But because it's my favorite doesn't mean I don't think other games have better design. I don't think it's the best game and I'm willing to admit that games like SMT3 are better games. But P3 worked for me. I like both formulas a lot, and what I'm seeing from P5 is a complete step back.Lord Golbez wrote: On SMT IV. I mean, I guess it's alright. Well, I don't think you're going to be getting much happier about the bosses. The third palace boss was insultingly easy. Probably not worse than a lot of the full moon bosses in P3, but at least those were balanced by tougher Tartarus bosses.
It depends on what you're looking for in a game. SMT3 is definitely not objectively better.

I didn't. I hate Namingway and if there's a set name I usually stick with it.
Besides, as you'll find out the voices will often say "The Phantom Thieves" when the text says "The Phantoms." The discrepancy is a little irksome considering that's the name they chose for you and voices still say Phantom Thieves, but it would no doubt look worse if you changed the name to something very different.
I'm sorry I haven't played as much as you in a week, but I'm playing the game and very much talking about it. I'm being extremely fair, and even openly admitting that maybe it'll get better. More than 10 hours is more than enough to say the things I'm saying, especially after 200 hours played between P3 and P4. Between those hours and what I've played of 5, yes it is a complete step back and I consider that I could very much be incorrect.

I don't agree with HKK, but I can still see she's being fair from her perspective. I don't really agree overall that this is easier than previous Persona games (at least I think it's harder than P4, but probably easier than P3), but the bosses are easier and the comment about lack of variety of shadows from beginning to end of the dungeon is somewhat valid even up to palace 3 (which is the last I've finished). It's not completely true in that some monsters that appear on the last levels don't appear on the first and vice versa, but there are types that appear on all floors or at least both first and last. Still the groupings tend to get more dangerous at later floors, so I'm not in complete agreement here, but it's no an invalid complaint.

I'm almost done with May and I've barely done jack shit except what the game tells me to do. Linear sequence after linear sequence like the game is on rails. I want to go raise my guts but I can't. I want start a new s link with some politician but I can't. One segment and your entire day is done. This is awful and they have completely misunderstood what made P3/4 so charming and fun. P3 mixed simulation with rpg. It allowed you to make choices. During some weeks, such as during exams, things were linear but after that you could still do some crap without the game telling you what to do. Have a regular day with no fighting but there's some story sequence and want to do something in the evening? Well guess what? You need to go to bed for whatever reason. We don't want to be late for the art exhibit. Get back from the art exhibit, zero fighting involved, just a bunch of talking? Well it's night time and you should normally be able to do something but I won't let you because I'm a bad game designer. They have taken the sim element of Persona 3 - its most endearing feature - and turned it into horrible, mediocre mish mash. Playing this game is beyond frustrating at this point. I don't ever recall a single month in P3 going by so fast with such little fan fare.

It also seems possible to me that you're enjoying it less because you're playing in shorter chunks. Several days in a row without free time is frustrating but probably worse if you play in short chunks of time (I assume you're playing shorter sessions based on your progress).

I just finished palace 4 on this. I have to say that I appreciate the fact that limited SP and only being able to heal it by consumables really encourages using all party members throughout a palace.
These are actually spoilers for those that haven't made it to palace 3 yet at least.
Although I find myself using Makoto in most of my party configurations. She seems to be a lot like Mitsuru not only in terms of character type (smart, serious, student council president, obvious stuff) but also in terms of being a badass damage dealer. I almost always had Mitsuru in my part in P3, which put her levels closer to the MC's than the rest of the party. That discrepancy won't happen here so much, thanks to the Mishima confidant, but I expect Makoto will often be in my party.
I feel like I've overextended my reach on Confidants at this point. There's no way I'm going to max all the ones I have and juggling the ones I have probably means I won't max others I could otherwise. That said, a lot of them give useful abilities, so it's good to diversify. There's a couple confidants I'm almost actively avoiding adding at this point though just because I don't want to ruin my chances of maxing others. I'll probably get them at some point after I've maxed a few.

They are different for each confidant, but let me give you a run down of some of the basics:
1. Each confidant provides an experience boost for its own arcana. That means that when you fuse a persona of that arcana it can gain levels depending on your rank with that confidant. I haven't been keeping track to much but usually in P3/P4 this translates to 5 levels at Rank 10, and is always at least one level.
2. Party members get some unique skills like other confidants, but also a lot of the same skills. These include baton pass which lets you carry over your one more to them with boosted attack power, follow up attacks, surviving death attacks with one HP, and dying in the place of the hero (when the hero dies it's game over, so this is very useful).
3. The other confidants give abilities unique to them. These can help you make the most of your free time, with shadow negotiation, swapping out party members during battle, etc. There's lots. You can always go to your confidants in the menu screen and check what the abilities do, including the next one they will learn.

One confidant gave me the ability to switch out party members during battle. Another improved my ability to speak to demons. 90% of the abilities granted by confidants are very useful. Party members all follow the same pattern as Golbez said.
If you create a persona of the same arcana as your confidants it will gain more levels and abilities as a result. For example Ann is the Lovers Arcana so if you create one of those and she is ranked up a bit it will level up.
When they say a persona isn't very powerful they basically mean its not gonna level up when you create it (you probably don't have the confidant - but you probably wouldn't early on in the game anyway)

Just finished the second Palace and a couple thoughts:
Like LG says, it's nice to have Light and Dark attacks that aren't insta-kill. Also I'm really digging the new elements (Psy and Nuke). Finally got to try it on a boss and it was pretty damn helpful.
The streamlining of days is kinda bugging me. There's definitely more to do, but I do feel like school zips by with hardly any option to boost stats or hang out with confidants. And I really really hate that cat now.
Also finally figured out how to change audio tracks! So now I've tried out Japanese, but I think I've gotten too used to the dub - so I'll switch back to English.
One of my biggest peeves in this game is the camera for stealth/ambushes - every so often I'll hide behind an object but the camera is so limiting that I either can't see enemies, or on a very limited angle. It's gotten me in hot water more than once now

It's nice that they gave nuke a special boost in dealing with burn, shock, freeze, and also that they did the same for wind so that it's got something special even though it doesn't randomly inflict status effects (or I guess wind doesn't work on all of those, but that's good too because it distinguishes it from nuke). Agreed on the camera. That camera shit combined with some faulty targeting to next hiding spot has made me almost get caught by enemies lots of times (and probably actually get caught once or twice). However, that's still probably superior to baiting shadows near a safe elevated spot so I can get them to turn around and attack from behind in Tartarus.

I'm not going to count like severe attacks, Doom. It's possible I even did get those skills, but if they're so late it barely matters. Also, we're Psy and Nuke in any previous Persona or just SMT? If only SMT, I don't care.
. At any rate, I'm finding Kouga to be more useful in palace 5 than I ever found Hama to be.
Looking up on the Megaten wiki it seems like Psy is new to the Persona series, and that Nuke only existed in fusion attacks in Persona 2, which is pretty easy to miss as being an "element" IMO. Having played part of Persona 2, I know what fusion attacks they're talking about, and using them is a pretty important part of getting through the game, but still I'd say it's quite different than the situation here.
