Haha, yup. For some reason I also remember that you had a slightly unfortunate nickname. I used to post at SG and FF:WA, and actually continued posting at FF:WA until a couple years ago. There's still a core group active there, too.

I think there was also a splinter forum from SG but I can't remember the name. I remember BioCrimson was there, he was someone I clearly remember.

Ah, nostalgia...

I've looked up FFWA every now and then, but I don't recognize any of the names anymore. I don't know if that's because all the people are different, the people I knew changed their nicks, or maybe I just don't remember the people from FFWA as well because I didn't post there as much. Maybe a combination of all of the above.

The splinter forum started as Squarepedia, became Wandering Flame, and then Final Battle, and I believe that at some point it simply ended, but it may still exist in some form.

Golbez, I definitely remember you (if you are the same Lord Golbez). Cybernetic Empire, your name rings a bell too.

Anyway, hi. I'm not 14 anymore, but this is making me feel like I am.

Not 14 anymore huh? (welcome back)

When I saw not 14 anymore, before I read the post through and saw it was Shine, for a second I wondered if it was samantha14.

Happy day-after SG Day folks!!!! Why stop the party rite?

I'm going to be in Tofino July 15-18, if anybody wants to join for surfing, bbq and mountain dews. :)

Will be bringing my boy with me. He's a drinker, but mostly of milk and lemonade.

I've never actually been to Tofino! I'll probably still be broke in July though. Are you passing through Van on your way there at all?

It was pretty funny when I ran into Neil online years ago. A Welsh guy joined the established World of Warcraft guild I was in and I never made the connection since he would use his real name and not 'Neil'. Then one day he passingly mentions his friend "DJ Damien" and I make the connection.

I'm not sure there'd be any great activity on any given day if we dragged it over a week, though.

Do you live in Phoenix or are you just there for the con? I just moved to LA a couple months ago after living in Phoenix for 15 years.

Phoenix isn't much better. Your options are literally:

1. Go to Scottsdale and rub up next to sweaty douchebags in overpacked bars all night.

2. Go to Mill Avenue and rub up next to sweaty college kids in overpacked bars all night.

3. Go to Bar Smith downtown and rub up next to sweaty hipsters in an overpacked roof all night.

4. Go to something happening at someone's house.

5. Do nothing.

I'm a quiet, keep to myself kind of guy and Phoenix has millions of people living in it and I still become a dude everyone knows and could get the hookup with things. That's how pathetic Phoenix's nightlife is. I'm so happy I moved out to LA. There's a billion and one things to do every day. Also people are a lot nicer, which I didn't expect.

My experience with LA was less than good. Meet with racism and only low paying job ( I believe at the time fast food restaurant were paying more than what I was been offered. )

Besides nice hiking area and shooting ranges during the day, there nothing to do in town other than 4th ave and downtown (which is basically Mill avenue for Tucson.)

Not saying Phoenix is perfect (not touching the highway during peak hours), but is reasonable better than Tucson.

Have a nice day

I have to say, as a naive European racism is the thing that shocks me most about the US. I didn't really notice it when I traveled here as a kid, blissfully unaware of what was going on around me, but since I've moved to NYC I can't help seeing the ugly truth on a daily basis. :(

So in your experience, is Arizona better/more tolerant than CA? Or is the problem with LA in particular?

As funny as it might be, I have felt more tolerance in Arizona (even with the whole Racist stereotype that Arizona gets.) And that's the funny thing, I'm a white Mexican, so I'm not that used on racism (I'm white, clear eyes and really dress up as a regular american.) If I keep my mouth shut, so people don't pick up on my accent, I can pass as a regular gringo.

Of course this was my experience on been in LA (Hollywood area to be more specific) for a brief period. Then again there are plenty of Mexicans in south Arizona, not so sure how I would fare up in the north, were is more white/redneck/Mormon population.

Interesting to know. It's weird how racism is so huge in America. Sure, it exists in Europe as well, but certainly not to the same extent. Then again it's hard to compare, as far as I know no one cares about my cousins being called Sanchez, although I guess their life would be harder with a Muslim sounding name.

In NYC it's great to see so many people from everywhere, however I find it so weird to see only black people, Puerto ricans or Mexicans in services and delivery jobs. How this can happen in a place which is supposed to be modern is very confusing @_@

My experience so far has been that LA people are WAY more chill by a HUGE margin than people in Phoenix. But there is an order of magnitude more people in LA than Phoenix so I suppose it depends on what circles you're in. Although even random strangers so far have been much friendlier than in Phoenix, wherever everyone seems incredibly pissed off 24/7. I had people follow me to parking lots and threaten me on multiple occasions for imagined traffic slights. This is also a state where you don't need a permit to carry a concealed weapon, so you can imagine how terrifying that is.

To dive ill-advisedly into this racism conversation, what bothers me particularly about Europe is that many Europeans are very confident they're hardly racist at all, but then perfectly well-educated people simply cannot see the problems with things like this, which by and large would raise GIGANTIC red flags in North America.

Yeah, I don't know. It seems to me that Europe can be pretty bloody racist to me. You've got literal nazis protesting against refugees in Germany. Mind you, Germany is a much smaller country than the US and has still taken many more refugees, but those guys are still racist.

Also, this is just an impression that may be wrong, but it seems to me that European countries tend to identify themselves ethnically a lot more than the US does. Granted, there are still a lot of people racist here that try to identify American culture with white western European ancestry and for them it's only a "melting pot" as long as it's all white, but it still seem to me that nationality isn't entirely separate from ethnicity in Europe (i.e., you're French citizens if you have French ancestry, German citizens if you're Germanic, you can get into Norway, Finland, etc. if you have blond hair and blue eyes).

@Fei, where would that be considered a tradition? @_@
As Waward said, I'm sure there are racist idiots everywhere, and there are certainly some in my own country, but I dunno, it doesn't seem as bad. Then again I could totally be wrong.
Regarding the lack of ethnic diversity in some European countries, it's certainly true in some but I wouldn't say it's true in Germany, Spain, France and the UK. I could be wrong as I haven't looked at official data, but here are a few examples:

- Germany has a pretty important population from Turkish origin and more specifically from Kurdistan. This is why Germany is actually welcoming so many refugees.
- UK has many people coming from its former empire. Sure, some areas are pretty "white", but in many cities you'd see people from everywhere. They also have tons of EU citizens living there, all over the country.
- France has the biggest Muslim population in Europe I think? And also the biggest Jewish population. Which is why things can get pretty complicated at times, religion is a very touchy subject. Also, most of the people I know in France have at least one foreign grandparent, myself included. Some of these are from European origin but many are from other parts of the world. Although for some reason foreigners tend to think French people are all white, which is pretty confusing to me. @_@
- Spain used to be called "Al Andalus" for quite a long time, do I need to say more? My own family comes from Andalusia, where you've had people from all over the Mediterranean area for centuries. Also for some reason some areas of Spain are full of people from Germanic ancestry.

Now it's true that in some places like Czech Republic I've seen mostly Slavic people and it's true some countries are pretty racist (at least Italy has that reputation for example). All of Europe currently has a problem with far-right parties becoming more popular, so I clearly won't deny that. But I dunno, to me I see more inequalities between races in the US, although it's true that I may not be aware of what's going on in my own country. After all, I haven't been living there for the last 13 years, so what do I know? :heh

That's Black Peter of the Netherlands. There was some controversy around it not too long ago, and presumably that was not the only time, because it's obviously ridiculously racist. But it's a tradition that goes back to before people got all complainy about racism, and it's about fun and joy, so how could it be racist??

Oh, it being from the Netherlands kinda makes sense I guess, Dutch people hate political correctness there. :heh (my SO works for a Dutch company and we lived in Amsterdam for two months, so yeah, we do interact with Dutch people on a regular basis)

Something like that wouldn't go down very well in the UK or even in France. :erm
