The Music Thread!
Well, figured this is always a good one. What have we all been spinning lately? I recently got a gig at a bar in Helsinki as a metal dj, till I leave, and when I return in december for good, so it's been quite good!
Being in Finland though I have been spinning crazy amounts of Finnish metal, from the more obscure like Thyrane(industrial metal), Norther(melodic metal and probably one of the best bands here, they need to be known more in the states!!), to some of the real undergroun stuff like Sargeist, very few know them in america.
Then of course there has been the more popular, like Nightwish(operatic metal, getting quite big in the US and they are HUGE here), to Children of Bodom(same with them, and they are actually personal friends of mine, so I support them when i can, they'll be back in the US in October!).
Of course there are my old standbys like Swedish and Norwegian metal, classical music still and some of the old skool US bands like WASP and Skid Row. :D
What about all of youse, anything you been into/getting into lately? I am always wondering about what folks listen to ever since i became a rock journalist.
EDIT: I forgot to mention some great Finnish folk-metal bands like Ensiferum, Finntroll, and Wintersun...anyone who hasnt heard this stuff, its metal, but a lot of traditional instruments are used, like tamborines, acoustic guitars, mandolins, and the like....flutes, etc.

I haven't listened to my Nightwish CD for like 4 years, and now because of your topic I want to listen to it again... Too bad I left it in France T_T
Is HIM any good?
At the moment I'm not listening to anything in particular, I haven't bought anything for a year... Last CD I bought was Moulin Rouge's OST and I really like it, but I need something new...
And I'm still waiting for the last SGUK CD......

Re: The Music Thread!
im starting to distain music now-a-days
music from the 60-70' seems to have way more... well... heart in the music. To me it seems like music today is so pre-packaged, target-group-oriented and just over all lacks any sort of soul or heart in the actual music ;__; tho there are the occasional exceptions. I do like System of a Down, because there's no point in their lyrics where an angst ridden teen can say "man... i really identify with this!"

For some reason, I listen mostly to OSTs (be it from movies, games, or anime), or reorchestration of these (overclocked remix...)
Last CDs I bought must have been the Mystica compil, featuring classical reorchestration of famous movie themes. Before that, there was the Black Mages, a metal rendition of famous FF boss themes.
...
No wait, actually, last CD I bought was Bach cantata #4, so I could train before the concert of the university choir.
Edit : System of a Down :frank...
Chop Suey was playing continuously in my lab this summer. Great senseless song to sing along to, when you worked for so long you feel like your brain is coming out through your ears
Basically, when working, I listen either to techno/dance/trance remixes to concentrate, or to any song I can sing, to let pressure out.
*just finished Duvet*

Congrats on the job Fen
That's pretty awesome, I was wondering where you were.
As far as my music tastes.. well, English music I'm still listening to the same stuff I was ages ago. I don't mind Linkin Park at all, but I have no real desire to go out and "find" new music for some reason. When people send me songs I listen to them and if I liek it, I'll check them out. But that's about it.
I'm pretty far gone into Japanese rock music, but my main area of interest is the fascinating world of Japanese hiphop
Not for the quality, but just to listen to it and watch videos as if they were experiments gone horribly wrong.

Who is it VVV
I'm most looking forward to the next Jamiroquai album (due out in Nov).
Currently, playlist is filled with a combination of stefans urban / electronic stuff and the SGTV soundtrack.

Re: The Music Thread!
My friend and I emailed this band from Japan called "My Way My Love" last winter asking if they'd ever come to America to play. They responded with "Go book us one." So we did. And they came this summer and we went on a tour across the East coast/Midwest for 3 weeks and they got a US record deal. They'll be back in the states in December/January and we're doing a full 7 week tour cross country style. Everyone bring their friends.

I can't stop listening to Hybrid, I'll tell you that much.
I'm just definitely in love with progressive breakbeat music.
Also started listening to the old stuff like REM and The Cure.

Re: The Music Thread!
I've been listening to As Hope Dies full length to get hyped for their new stuff since they came back together. I've also been listening to the new Hot Cross. Lots of Every Time I Die (last night in town, hot damn sucks) and of course DRAGONFORCE.
Re: The Music Thread!
My friend told me Social Distortion is TOP SHELF so I'm downloading a few of their songs. I heard one on the radio and it wasn't bad, so WE SHALL SEE.

Oh and of course tons of A Life Once Lost. Anyone that can appreciate good lyrics and amazingly well written technical guitarwork should check them out.

The latest additions to my playlist are a variety of Matthew Good Band songs (courtesy of no name
) because he sent me one or two and it reminded me that it's pretty good stuff to listen to! It's kind of monotonous, though, just like listening to any band over and over.
I too can't be bothered to search for my own music these days, but I quite enjoy what other people send me.
And fei is quite right about the prepackaged stuff existing in past days as well.

I do admit i find it hard to pass over a good 19th century and before classical or traditional chamber music CD and stuff. I have a great CD of Finnish organ music.
Calbrena: As for HIM....it depends, I mean they are sort of just...rock, I dunno how you described them, they are MASSIVE here, not totally my thing but i can't say they are terrible, its not hard to listen to, you might want to give them ago.
Of course i can't say no to the good old videogame OSTs!!
And thanks, John! Yeah, this is where I am. I go home in 10 days, but return for good in December.
And to the 3rd child: DRAGONFORCE!!!! Dude, i cant believe someone else knows that band, I havn't heard a power metal band that i liked so much since I heard Blind Guardian, Lost Horizon and Stratovarius

yay, I've just found my Nightwish Oceanborn CD, I did bring it here with me after all!

I listen to OSTs a lot as well. I've got lots of Kanno, Uematsu, Mitsuda, Danny Elfman, Kenji Kawai and Joe Hisaishi on my playlist, + few Nintendo's mp3 from the european site
Oh, and actually my last music-related purchase was Interstella 5555....

And my buddy got me hooked on Dir En Grey I must say. Something about those guys that just kick my ass
I was watching a video, their drummer is one of the most girliest lookin guys i ever seen but MAN can he pound the drums!
Calbrena: You ought to check out the new Nightwish cd...it's amazing!!! I dug their other stuff before but their new one is SO good!
John: Yeah...I have no clue how this happened....after being here a month and a half i jsut dont wanna leave, but its a good idea if i go home, work, save up, get situated with all my stuff, etc. Best plan of action when doing a big move i think. Be nice to see the friends and family before I leave.

I'm still having problems with it, but there's a bunch of catchy tunes on it. She's getting my listens, and so are the Pixies. The pixies <3.Neptune wrote:I'm currently listening to Björk's Medùlla. Right now I'm going through my Ipod and ranking everything for one of my scripts.

The Pixies!! Man, it's cool, cos I am going to be back in the States when they are playing their show in Camden, so I hope to be going to that, its right before my return to Helsinki.
I've been cranking old Offspring too for some reason. One of those Finnish bands did such a good cover of 'Smash' i had to dig out the old cd again

I really hope I won't miss them. I've already missed Wilco, Sonic Youth and Morrissey this year, and I absolutely refuse to miss out on the Pixies. But damn, I can't find anyone that cares about them, everyone I know don't dig concerts or only like evanescence.
Smash is the only 'pure punk' album I like.

Björk's voice is pretty awesome. When it comes to the "modern", not-OST stuff, a peculiar female voice is often what will grab my attention towards a specific band/singer/song. That's what got me into the Cranberries during my highschool years, for instance.
Apart from the CD/MP3 I own, when I listen to the radio (on my alarm clock, for instance), I often end up on stations broadcasting oldies from... let's say, the second half of the last century. These songs which passed the test of time are often quite interesting, when it comes to lyrics.
This will sound rather cliché, but I must say it feels like there was much more variety and originality in pop music, back then...

I bought Bad Religion's newest album and found it quite to my liking. I haven't got around to listening to more of their stuff though.
