With over 72 million PlayStation 2 units having been shipped worldwide, the console is easily the world's most popular computer entertainment platform - and now, thanks to a new redesign, it's set to become even more of a favourite.
Making its debut in stores from November 1st, the newly designed PlayStation 2 is half the weight of the original design, and the internal volume of the console has been reduced by an incredible 75%. The new design is only 2.8cm thick, compared to the 7.8cm of the original console.
Despite the smaller size, the new PlayStation 2 features enhanced functionality. An integrated Ethernet port makes the console ideal for gamers looking to dip their toes into the world of online gaming for the first time. With games like WRC 4, Burnout 3: Takedown and Star Wars Battlefront bolstering the PlayStation 2's fast-growing list of online titles, the time has never been better to explore this exciting new area of gaming.
That pretty much says it all.
It's just over a month until this fucker gets released
Contender for thinnest games console ever.
I wonder how hard it'll be to mod though
Hmmm.... I don't know about the looks, I guess it'll look better in real life than in the picture, even if it is almost as 2D.
It looks more like a really tall paper weight or a fancy book-end than a game console. My launch-day PS2 is still goin' strong though, so no worries for me
I think that it looks pretty sweet. I'll buy this if my launch day PS2 ever breaks. I almost ended up buying a new one about a year and a half ago but when I took it apart and cleaned the lens it solved all of my DRE problems.
This model has all the stuff that was improved in the latest ps2 model (the one with the faster dvd drive, a BETTER dvd drive that doens't fuck up, dvd + r support, and a multitude of other thigns). I love my new ps2
The only problem I've ever had with my PS2 is the analag function on my controller going off randomly when playing SH4. Although even if that turns out to not be a weird SH4 game thing, all I would have to do is get a new controller.
Personally I consider this to be amazing, as my PS2 just kicked the bucket. I was going to get another PS2 once MGS3 came out, but now I can get this instead, for the same price.

There's no point in expending the resources necessary to make it better with the PS3 around the corner. The point of this PStwo is to make cheaper-to-produce PS2s for a price that yields a nice profit, just like the PSone did.

You're stupid. If you want to a PC, get a PC. Consoles, especially in terms of processing power and memory (not in terms of ports and such), are fixed so that developpers have ONE platform to work on. Adding more memory and stuff like that would be spitting on everyone that has bought a ps2 already, and saying "Hey 3rd parties, our hardware sucked, here's a much better one!!!". Of course, you could say "Well they could've increased the bandwidth and such things for increased load times", and I'll tell you that a modded Xbox project has attempted this by putting in a faster BUS, more memory, and overclocked the CPU and it turned out unstable and useless.

Give me a source to that “cheaper-to-produce” comment and I’ll believe you. As you said, the PS3 is right around the corner, so it would’ve been more reasonable to redevelop the PS2 when it’s going to be pretty much obsolete soon enough.

Actually, it’s fixed because it’s easier to develop one self contained, minimal maintenance setup for use by nearly ever age and class. Yeah, it’s really spitting on current owners and 3rd party developers if they would simply add more memory to the video card or the system over all. Pretty much anyone who’s a console fan already has a PS2, so why are they targeting? It seems more like they want current owners to go out and get themselves this new slim one. I’m sure they “could’ve increased the bandwidth” without having it be unstable like your modded Xbox (it’s really easy!). And I’m sure all the third party developers would be real upset if they had a bit more graphic support to work with and set up that makes their previous releases look better.

Its not that easy to change the internal hardware specs and simply have games (old and new) "run better".
Sure you could increase the bus speeds or bandwidth, and new games could be made to take advantage of this, but some of the older games may not function properly. Any calculation that relied on system timing is now shot, and games may screw up.
Console system with scalable hardware on the performance level just isn't feasable. Console gaming is meant to be error free and painless to set up and get going, unlike PC gaming (because console gaming is targeted at the masses who don't know a lot about troubleshooting).

Nintendo, Sony Make Pushes Before Holidays
09.21.2004, 03:34 PM
Nintendo Co. and Sony Corp. made separate product announcements Tuesday that the video game giants hope will attract more customers ahead of the highly competitive holiday shopping season.
Nintendo said its handheld device, called Nintendo DS, will arrive in North American stores for $149.99 on Nov. 21, 10 days before the product is launched in Japan.
Rival Sony, meanwhile, announced a much slimmer, reworked PlayStation 2 designed to cut manufacturing costs amid fierce competition in the console market, which includes Nintendo's own GameCube and the Xbox from Microsoft Corp.
And there’s something wrong with wanting a definitive source? Seeing as the smaller model don’t include any design upgrades and only a redesign of the layout and general electronics one wouldn’t expect much of a manufacturing cost difference besides a small drop in over all materials.
& Strife – Explain to me how I’m any more idiotic then you are.

OHOHO!
Why would I need to explain it when you do such a fine job of proving it in any number of posts?
The only point you proved was that you were wrong and need to look up more then one source before you start opening your gob hole trying to argue.
