Good "starting" RPGs
Okay, so I have a friend who is a little behind the times with console games. He likes Final Fantasy X...and that's about all he's played.
I want him to get into RPGs some more but I'm not sure which ones are good to start with. I don't want anything too complex to burn out his brain or else he won't play any others.
By the way, he IS a graphics whore...keep it in mind.

Golden Sun.
If this guy is going to write off a game because it's not supar uber eyecandy, perhaps RPG is the wrong genre to be looking into.saranicole wrote:By the way, he IS a graphics whore...keep it in mind.

HKK and Plaz, if you START someone on FFVII, they may become one of those insufferable FFVII-whores (You know the ones... "lololo ff7 teh bes n clud seferos r culest caz dey got biiiiiiig sords lolololo i hop sqar neva maeks a difrnt gaem eva gain n jus maeks moer ff7!!111one lolololololo ff7 graetst gaem eva!!!!111one!!!eleven!!").
Start them on a different one first, gives them less chance of becoming a complete waste of air. >___<

I agree, however most peole have to work their way up to Xenogears. You can't let an RPG newbie start off with XG, it'll scare him off. Especially if he's American since %98 of us are illiterate in the first place...yuka wrote:Give 'em Xenogears. Best RPG evAr. (I'm a Xeno-Whore)

Likes FFX, big graphics whore?
That last part is kind of a shame because it eliminates a lot of good classics.
Let's see...
On the PC / Xbox: KotOR, KotOR 2, Jade Empire are all solid RPGs with excellent graphics and a fairly linear game design (like a Final Fantasy game, but also like a Final Fantasy game, expect cinematic plot twists). Oblivion has excellent graphics but The Elder Scrolls series is nothing like a linear japanese console RPG, and there's no party members.
On the Gamecube, I'd highly recommend Tales of Symphonia and Fire Emblem : Path of Radiance. The former more than the latter, but both have solid graphics, and good storylines (Symphonia, to me, heavily invokes FFX's storyline, however).
On the PS2: well, there's at least one easy / obvious suggestion: FFX-2.
KH and KH2 are a completely different animal than a Final Fantasy game, and are enjoyable on some different level (I like them, just don't like them as much, but my wife enjoys them more). The graphics are undeniably stellar, but the Disney content doesn't sit well with me.
Xenosaga ain't bad. Star Ocean ain't bad either, and both are available as greatest hits now.
Honestly, the graphics whore limitation makes it hard to recommend much. One thing worth noting is that many Final Fantasy games have such good plots and rich gameplay that they have replay value even now, and FF1-6 are going to be available on GBA / DS.
