Ok so it's out. Lets discuss/find subtitles asap. I've submitted a subtitle request for this at subs.2ya.com which is a great site for subs.
I've already seen the movie raw like months ago in theaters and it was amazing, so I'm looking forward to seeing it with subs so I know wtf is going on while the pretty pictures move.

I'm sure it'll get a showing in Vancouver, as there's a very large anime following there and pretty much all the anime theatrical releases have had limited runs. I'm not in Vancouver though, so...
I'm looking forward to seeing the new Appleseed movie too. I didn't get to see it in theaters because I was broke at the time. Not sure when the DVD is coming out.

Okay, just finished it. Horrible translation aside, I thought the movie worked very well within itself. It's abysmally cold, dark, and detached from the viewer's perspective, but it's clear that that's the way it was meant to be. That's the biggest problem, though; I can't see any normal viewer being much involved in the movie. It does too good of a job of imparting its coldness onto you. The dialogue here is at least twice as thick as that in the original, which is likely to turn off even more people. And there's barely any action. And Oshii's message hasn't seemed to change much; he's just gotten to piling several additional layers of historical/literary references and convoluted speech on top of it. I guess the best way to describe Innocence would be that it is even more "hardcore" than the first one.
Make no mistake, however. It deserves to be seen for the visuals alone. It's easy to say that they are astounding in a way such that I can easily claim that I have never seen animation like this. The score has some tunes that are heavily reminiscent of the original movie, and as a whole fits the piece quite well.

Re: Ghost in the Shell: Innocence DVD RIP
The Hawks sub is fucking shit. The subtites were incorrect in so many places, a couple scenes they didn't even bother to sub likely because they didn't understand it, the timing on the subs was horrible, and they were too fast and long to read many times.
That said, it was nice to finally see the movie with subs and I enjoyed it much more knowing what was going on, for the most part. Like doom said the dialouge is super thick and there's a few too many litterary quotes. The plot is quite confusing and takes a lot to tie together in my mind. I think it will take several viewings before I really understand how everything ties together. The animation is gorgeous of course, and anyone who is an anime fan must see this film for that alone. It's just beautiful.

I can't belive you people would actually download the Hawks version of the movie since you should all remember the horrible job they did on Spirited Away. I would download the raw but I don't have that kind of harddrive plus I couldn't burn it off if I wanted to so I'll patiently wait for the North American DVD release.
No, I don't, since I wasn't around to watch that then. And frankly I wouldn't care. 1) I'll definitely be watching this again when it comes out on DVD, and 2) it's nearly impossible for me to see it in theaters anyway. So no, I don't give a shit. It's not my problem if you can't simply dismiss the bad subs and watch the movie, for the most part, as if it were already a raw.
Edit: even still, I'm surprised that you wouldn't make room on your hard drive to download the raw in these circumstances.

Saw it at the theaters today. Living in a city has its advantages. :E Movie was pretty good even though it seemed very unfriendly to the normal viewer.
I know some of the people here were around when the Hawks subbed Spirited Away and I remember how a lot of people were bitching about them too. I wouldn't mind seeing this movie in the theatres but no theatre over here would ever carry the movie and even if they did I doubt that they would have it subbed so I wouldn't even bother watching it in the theatres in the first place. If I wanted to see the movie I would have downloaded the raw but as I said I don't have that kind of harddrive at the moment so I'll wait patiently for the DVD release.Doom wrote:No, I don't, since I wasn't around to watch that then. I need all my harddrive to keep up with the raws of the current ongoing anime series so I don't have any spare harddrive for something that is close to a gig.
