Oof. Glad she's doing well. This happened to a friend of mine back several years ago with the Swine Flu -- she must've been exposed before she had the vaccine and got sick right afterwards.Mitsurugi CP wrote:My mother-in-law tested positive the day after she got the J&J vaccine. She was lucky in a way because she got better very fast. Only had mild symptoms for, like, 3 days.
Apparently BC is the biggest number of P1 cases outside of Brazil. GJ.
And people know about this because of the Canucks. If they are having so much spread despite the careful NHL protocols, I certainly hope the majority of the population can look and take away a lesson here...
A couple of restaurants refused to close per the health order (no indoor dining for 3 weeks, patios still okay (which is FUNNY b/c many of the patios are ENCLOSED SPACES that don't follow the guidance)) and finally after a few days had their business licenses revoked..... temporarily, until the 3-week order ends. How about taking it away forever?
We've used cloth masks this past year and we don't really go anywhere except Safeway/London Drugs, but with the rise of P1 and it's ridiculous transmissability (approx 2.5x vanilla covid) I'm thinking of getting some proper KN95's to use over the home stretch.

I'm thinking of getting some proper masks (we use cloth reusable ones) in light of the P1 variant and it being the home stretch now but keep seeing people say that they're useless if they don't seal correctly. Is that fully true? I get the message, but the cloth reusable masks don't exactly seal either and have loads of gaps. Would N95 variants be better in both cases?
It's not like I can go fit test things, would just have to buy some and hope for the best.

Masking isn't so much about filtering as dispersing/reducing air movement and droplet capture. Of course most cloth material isn't going to be able to filter virus particles, but filters can still capture particles smaller than the pore size of the filter medium, because filters can also capture particles by impaction, interception, diffusion, and electrical charge.
The reusable cloth masks you have now are fine. At work, I have to use hospital supplied masks that are just regular surgical masks that have the gaps that form at the sides of my face. If you use masks that aren't properly fit-tested, you may well be using something that's no more effective than the masks you're already using because they'll have gaps, too. A properly fitted N95 has no gaps around the circumference of the mask edge.
Despite that, and working on a floor with actively infectious COVID patients since April, we have only had 2 outbreaks that were both due to a failure to follow protocols about wearing masks and distancing when unmasked (i.e. for meal breaks).
I've never tested positive for COVID, and I've been working on COVID floors and vaccinating the general public at mass vaccination sites in my state with only those blue disposable masks and polymer goggles. Continuing the recommended practices of masking up, keeping safe distances, and routine handwashing work well when people do it.

“Outdoor hospitality and non essential retail” open today. Saw a betting shop swarming with old men. Theme parks open today too... Once again you can queue and go on a roller coaster with hundreds of people before you’re allowed into the house of a friend of family member.
Under 50’s without underlying health conditions have still not been called for a vaccine though.

At this point I'm mostly curious about 2 things:
1. how many people will refuse to get the vaccine, and how will that affect the trajectory of the virus/overall herd immunity?
2. will it become like another flu that mutates yearly and we have anuual shots for?

My very amateur wishy washy idea of what is likely is that we all get vaccinated or contract the illness or whatever, it’s no longer a “novel” coronavirus (even in mutated form), and yeah, it’s probably part of the seasonal flu shot and also when we do get it it’s probably not as intense as it has tended to be so far.
Time for Mitsurugi to disillusion me!

1. It remains to be seen. If enough refuse, we may never get there. But hopefully with greater distance from orange dishing antivaxxers and once it's cleared for, say, children 6 months and older (for which clinical trials are currently being done) there will be a lot more buy in.Vibing_V wrote:At this point I'm mostly curious about 2 things:

2. Probably yes. The nice thing about these new vaccines is they can be modified and produced faster than flu shots once more long-term infrastructure is in place. At least, compared to the technology we use to make flu shots in the US.

Canadians were okay-ish until this year, when everyone seemed to collectively give up and decide it was time to stop doing things to reduce transmission.
Our numbers in BC are steady-ish, still increasing slightly. We're 2+ weeks into "circuit breaker" restrictions, and I keep wondering if this means the restrictions are working or if people don't a fuck, and how much worse/better the numbers would be on either side. Likely somewhere in between...
On the plus side, we're FINALLY putting up teachers (and firefighters, police) for vaccines. FINALLY. It's about goddamn time.

QC: curfews
ON: stay at home orders
MB: literally block off non-essential items in stores
BC: well, people are partying at Whistler and you're not supposed to go gather in groups outside, even though we told you you could. We're just gonna keep telling you to "be kind, be calm, do more" and pretend that covid doesn't spread in schools.

#1 the only measure that miight do something is restricting interprovincial travel and *some* workplace inspection. But at this point I don’t trust them on the latter.
#2 they want to police our way out of this by giving cops the right to stop anyone when they aren’t home because they aren’t home. This is such an overreach that most police forces say they won’t do this
#3 still no fucking paid sick leave for all during a ducking pandemic
#4 packing 30 kids in a school is safe but at a playground it isn’t
#5 oh and Doug ford decided we were supposed to get 300,000 vaccines a day all of a sudden which is a lie
#6 no wfh mandate
#7 essential workers are essential and still get fucked and not treated as essential. The work over the people.
#8 here’s a nice parallel with BC: well actually it’s ontarian’s fault that we’re here even if most big outbreaks are in workplaces and we’re not doing anything about it
I don’t even fucking know anymore. This province is losing the plot
Complete farce of a leadership. People will remember April 16 2021 in this province
