Back in the day it would have been difficult to do that even. It was enough just trying to handle GC as the posts were coming for some hours of the day.

I can remember back in the day when people played and could talk on a site like this about Final Fantasy games, because good ones were still being made and Square hadn't gone bankrupt and lost all their talent. Damn you FF:The Spirits Within! Damn yoooooou!!!!

Even so, most of the talk was not on games back then either. Their mere existence may have been beneficial though for drawing people here.

My Suggestion for revival?

Merge the forums. There is no need for four or five different subforums on a forum with so little discussion in the first place.

Although that won't solve the core problems, being:

  1. Square sucks now. Not only does that destroy our strongest common link, but it also means that nobody is looking for Square information on the internet anymore, and that in turn means no fresh faces. Fresh faces are the fuel that keeps a forum interesting.

  2. Alot of the core thread posters aren't here anymore (or nearly as often, anyways). Biocrimson, MoO, Dash, the list goes on. Without interesting thread posters, discussion stagnates.

  3. Alot of us are signifigantly older now. When I first stumbled on this site, I was about three/forths of the way through ninth grade: now, I'm three/forths of the way through a BS in Computer Science. Even though its only been six years, thats a huge difference.

Although you think I'd have something better to do at 3AM than be analyzing forum traffic here. It's an off night, I guess.

This is only a guess but it would probably take more work to merge the forums than it would be to leave them as they are. Laziness 1 - Change 0.

Also, it can't be helped that Square went downhill and in general people have lost interest in their games. If the site's name was changed it would be "different" and wouldn't be Square Gamer anymore. A lot of people who used to come here founded another Square site and then decided that Square was a thing of the past and ditched it for a new forum with a new name. Now (if it's even still around) NOBODY can find that place. At least SG has a history (and yes, that rhymes). Some people check every so often just "to see" and it's magically still around (a lot of us don't forget that this place was THE place to be when FFVIII was out).

The age thing can't be helped either. When I first came on here I was also very young and still in high school, now I am halfway through a BA in Biology and I have a gut. I also was much more enthusiastic, was "in touch" with popular culture, and had a lot more interesting things to say. Now I'm old and boring

Dakota.
I don't think merging all the forums into one would be a good idea.
All that would change is how easy it is to find a thread (which i'm sure it'd have an adverse affect on).

Once this place has been running propperly for a couple more months and has settled, I'll have a better idea of what to do to make it popular again.

The community has been around for maybe a couple or a few years more than SG itself. SG was made in early to mid 99 I believe. At any rate, it was definitely before May, which is when I started lurking and almost certainly after the end of 98, because I remember seeing the old site then, FF8.org or something.... SG's peak was in 2000 to 2001, I'd say. I'm sure different people have different ideas, but pretty much all of the old members like Bio and Skull were around then plus many of the entrenched members now joined in 2000.

Also I don't remember there being a yuka for 3 years. Are you sure you're not lying?

Yuka never posted until the days of late S7. I just visited the site to get gaming news, as I didn't know of any good sources.

I found this place looking for FFX blitzball stuff, Strife's FAQ.

This community started shortly after Final Fantasy VII was released on the PlayStation as part of a Final Fantasy VIII news/rumors site which I started. I believe that would be around 1997? The only people I know for fact were here back at the begining are Neil and Biz.

Idea Would you rather hear me complain about my back?

All I know is that Squaregamer came in after the Japanese release of FFVIII and just before the US release. FF8.org attracted a lot of people playing the import version of FFVIII. Bio if I remember was the first one here to find Selphie's The End spell (and not many people believed him that it was actually there, lol!).

Yes Kiyuri posted when I was in the peak of spamming, and I did not begin posting until several years after the SG's peak, which was about a year or 2 into the actual opening of SG.

Organization > merging. boo @ Laziness (though really you know I love being lazy <3) Anime lovers dont want to sift through GC and game shit to read their anime threads, GC whores don't want to sift through anime and game shit, gamers dont want to sift through anime & gc, etc...

Well Sally may have said all that, and it may well be true (except the fluffy part) but none the less, Jaffa cakes are biscuits. They get softer when you leave them out on the side, that makes them biscuits. Cakes get harder. The Jaffa cake people even proved it to the government (UK) to avoid having to pay VAT, no tax on biscuits as they're classed as necessities not luxury items like cakes.

You expect people to come here when you offer them something which had been scientificly proven not to be a luxury item? You might as well offer free bread. Rolling Eyes

Quote:

Lately, my back has been killing me. Maybe you'd have some good tips?

Well, I can tell you that by and large people our age (still in their 20's I assume) usually have back problems as a result of muscular atrophy due largely to inactivity of the body. In unscientific terms, this is largely because we live in the computer age and sit on our ass all day. This has the effect of making the muscles in our back weak (much weaker than they are supposed to be because people in previous generations walked around and were more mobile then a lot of us are today). As a consequence, if our muscles are in poor shape andwe do even marginal work we can end up screwing up our back (which is a pretty complicated "string" of discs tied together with muscle, if your muscles are weak your back is about as sturdy as a house of cards (the discs might shift or even bunch up on each other depending on how much you weigh). My back problems have increased as my weight has increased, the problems used to not be noticeable because I was skinny and had no muscles a few years ago (now I'm fat and have no muscles).

The solution of course (well, besides Ibuprofen and Advil) is to do some mild back excersises like these:

http://www.baptistonline.org/health/library/back4191.asp

I'm not talking about "working out", just do these when you start "noticing" your back is a little sore of whatnot (in general, whenever your body clues you in to what's going on with it it's a sign that something is lacking). It would be a good idea to do this like 10 minutes a few times a week if you really want to deal with the problem. Also, some pushups or even pullups a couple of times a week will help. When you pick up something, if your arm muscles don't absorb the weight they act as "levers" to hold the something in place so to speak while your back does the rest. I did this with a tall package that came and I was injured for awhile (so the arm strenght is ultimately important too! Now I do mild pushups and a few pullup sessions a week in an effort to keep my back capable of lifting normal everyday things better than that!).

Except that there is nothing to sift through because nobody is posting, which reminds me...

Once this place has been running propperly for a couple more months and has settled, I'll have a better idea of what to do to make it popular again.

I have a number of things to recommend to make this place popular again.

1. Put it on a server that's actually online for most of the day. This has the added benefit of the site actually being accessible when people want to show up to visit.

2. Substaintially increase the amount of naked women on here. SG is clearly lacking in this regard. If female posters don't feel comfortable with that they can lie to us about it (since we can't see them anyways). It's good just the same.

3. An emoticon only forum. A place where people can communicate with each other ONLY by using signs, pictures and emoticons. Posts with words on them are strictly forbidden and would need to be deleted immediately by a moderator.

4. Buy Square back from Enix, and force them to make good games again. We can accomplish this by way of a small collection and then do a raffle for who gets to be the new CEO. I can start by pledging $5 towards the cause. If Square becomes popular again they will come.

5. Juggling Monkey. When all else fails, create an animation of a juggling monkey and place it all over the site,. Menu bars, post icons, you name it, you see it, and there should be a monkey nearby juggling. I would explain the benefit of this, but it seems pretty self explanatory so I leave it at that.

Holy crap, that's actually original text. I was sure you had just copy-pasted it from somewhere

And yes, I agree. Especially with idea #2.

You might not believe it, but my suggestions for a better SG aren't copied and pasted from anywhere either (despite being the brilliant, all encompasing solutions that they are).

That's being done witin the next couple of weeks
It's going to cost more money but hopefully we'll make that back on bannerclicks during the increased uptime.

Mod of the Week? And how do you suppose I do that? 90% of the time when I try to log on here it stalls out at the "Waiting for www.squaregamer.com..." message. Of course, even if I don't show up at all I'll be upholding the proud mod the week tradition
