To say this game changed my whole world would be an understatement. Happy Birthday Final Fantasy VIII, released in Japan Feb 11 1999.

I guess he means the character. Nice that SG and FF8 share a birth year.

I spent quite a lot on a Japanese copy of Final Fantasy VIII (I wanna say £75, but it might have been £100) and had to do a disc swapping trick every time I wanted to play it (soon perfected this enough for it to be my normal method of playing PS1 games). Despite not understanding the thing (FFVIII actually taught me the first few written Japanese words I ever learned), I enjoyed it massively and played to the end, layer buying the game another few times as it was released elsewhere. One of my main reasons for hanging around SG/FF Extreme/Omega was for FF8 news and to then share impressions of the game. While it's not a perfect game, by any stretch, it's the most important game to this website.

If they ever remake FFVIII, I sure hope they use Angela Aki's version of Eyes on Me, or at least get Faye Wong to correct the Engrish.

That's not Engrish. It's just extremely awkward passive voice.

Well it was corrected in the Angela Aki version (which was a b-side on the FFXII theme song single). Just adding the odd "a" and "I"s into the song made it much more palatable.

Eyes on Me was the first MP3 I ever downloaded. I had never heard of the format and changed the file extension to .WAV so it'd be recognised and play on my computer.

I remember downloading Real Media files of the Guardian Force summons using GetRight, so I can resume every time the download fucked up. If only I had that enthusiasm for anything at all nowadays...

That was a lot more effort than getting Real Media files.

I've never been a huge fan of FF8 but I did find SG after coming across a news post containing the flash version of this:

That wazzup shit must be one of the oldest huge memes.

I came to SG because I wanted to talk about Evangelion. But also I liked Square games.

I kinda' miss the days of Japanese FF releases being months before international ones. FFXV came out on the same day worldwide and I don't see them going back.

Other RPGs I played through (or at least a lot of the way into) in Japanese include Final Fantasy IX (to the end of disc 1), Final Fantasy XII 9about 5-10 hours in), Final Fantasy XIII (finished) and Chrono Cross (can't remember, probably at least disc 2)). Played a load of others, but only got an hour or so into those.

There was some really shitty Square game for PS2 that I bought that for, but I cant remember what it was called now. It was basically a QTE action game that was super over hyped.

1G999 is replacing 2G9 as the topic of discussion. Can't let 1G999 become the face of reminiscing about the past!
