I'm not saying I can't enjoy games without story, but it's unlikely for a game without one to vecome GOTY for me. It would probanly only happen in a year where there aren't any really good rpgs. I'm sure I'd choose Zelda over Tales games, for instance.

I'd probably go as far as saying I wouldn't consider the story at all when picking GOTY.

The thing is. There are so few games with genuinely good stories that I stopped caring. If it's serviceable, I'm ok with it, so long as they aren't wasting my time with the stories.

I much prefer world building over plot in any case.

I'm the exact opposite. I think world-building is shit without a good plot. Makes me think of FFXII. If your focus is on minutiae of the world and not the story you want to tell, it's going to be dull.

Yeah but game designers are shit at writing good plots. There's maybe one or two per decade. Fuck that world building is better. Take the good FF games. Serviceable plots and excellent world building.

I used to just play my RPGs in Japanese and imagine I was missing a good story. Worked out for me!

Serviceable plots are fine. They don't have to be award-winning novels. They just have to hold my interest.

I played P5 again a couple of weeks ago and haven't played it again yet...
Since I got the internet, I've been playing Overwatch and Final Fantasy XIV. Yay games that require internet and have time-limited content.

Does Zelda count as a handheld game if I mostly play it on the Switch console not hooked up to the TV? If so, I change my vote in that category to Zelda.

I feel like all Switch games should be considered handheld games because the console basically is a handheld console with a docking station that connects to the TV. The TV hookup part is basically an accessory that comes with the console. The core console is a handheld. It's like my work laptop is still a laptop even though it goes into a docking station that hooks up to monitors.

Hmm

That would mean both of my favourite Zelda games are handheld games. It checks out.

Link's Awakening seems overrated to me, but then again I never got terribly far into it. They should do a remake for DS or Switch or something, so I can see what the fuss is about.

I'm just glad that list didn't include Ocarina.

I also think Link's Awakening seems overrated but never got that far. I mostly like it because you can steal. It did seem cool, though, don't get me wrong. What's so amazing about it that ranks it above all those others?

Every moment is absolutely perfect and 100% what I feel a Zelda game should be. We've been through thus elsewhere on the forum before, but it seems people have started paying proper attention to this game only recently. It used to be underrated, it's now correctly rated.

You can download and play it on a 3DS.

I don't have a 3DS.

Basically the only game I've played for the better part of a year now is BotW and I haven't even played that since... October?! Jesus!

So we'll see when I get around to Link's Awakening.

Does it have to be a "New 3DS" or can I download it on mine?

It's the same game (with a couple of extra colour-based bits) but I guess it lacks a little of the nostalgia.

No. I played part of its predecessor and had a hard time getting used to its complete lack of button use.

That's a kind way of putting it. I think what they did with that game was lazy, gimmicky, and inexcusable.

I think the game itself was fine. The mechanics worked.

But FUCK the ocean temple. Fuck that piece of shit artificially lengthening the game POS. Frust

Basically, the game made challenges out of things that would traditionally be cakewalk by forcing you to use the touchscreen to do them. I find that to be a pretty hard sell. If you've got to take away basic functionality that's existed from the earliest console days to make your design challenging, you're probably doing it wrong.

I found Phantom Hourglass to be okay even if I hated the stupid time limit dungeon.

Spirit Tracks however is just the worst.

Time limit with those controls sounds beyond awful. Don't remember if I got up to that dungeon or not though. I do remember trying to do some time sensitive stuff, but it's too foggy for me to remember if that was in dungeon or something on the overworld.
