the ds has been out for a couple days now. i bought mine about 12:45 am on the 21st. i love it. couldnt be happier. but now that the initial joy of having one is over i am worried about my new best friend, the touch screen. i am wondering how long it will last, how long it will take it to show signs of wear and tear and if it does wear will its performance be compromised?

does anyone know anymore than i do on the subject and if so does anyonw know how i might prevent this from happening to my DS (other than be really gentle on the screen, im doing my best)?

Go get yourself a screen protector for a PDA. It's just a small film that you put on top of the screen to protect it.

Don't know if it'll work well with the DS, but that's what I did with my Ipod and my screen has been harmless since. :>

Good idea, wish I'd have done it.

Mine's got two of those, both from when I accidentally dropped them on the solid concrete floor at work. Ahhh! It's got to many small scuffs from general usage though. Hey, as long as it still works right? ruroken

I really don't like the Nintendo DS touch screen. To be honest I think the whole Dual Screen thing isn't really needed, both screens are too small, and there's something annoying about touching the screen all the time, with your finger or that plastic toothpick....

All shop display models are already scratched to bits.
We wanted to play Wario Ware with an Xbox for a stylus but all they had out on display was an Xbox steering wheel... so we used that

I hate it when people keep the plastic film on their watches or i-pods and stuff. While I get the whole thing about wanting to keep it scratchless, when you see someone with one half-coming-off with bits of hair on it you just want to rip it off and shout at them.

My buddy has one of those shitty film covers on his PSP. When he shows it off he says "The picture looks even better, but I have a cover guarding the screen." Ahhh!

Film covers make me feel like removing them (quite often because of the few ugly little air bubbles that remain between the film and the screen)
It's like bubble wrap. Can you resist the urge to make them pop ?

... More on topic, there was a demo NDS at the local multimedia center, but I couldn't play Warioware, after what the local kids had done to the poor system
The center of the touch screen was totally dead...

Most of the reviews on DS games seen on G4tv house absolutely dick in terms of the dual/bottom screen use.

The funniest thing about that is that the touch screen has the better picture.

Lol does anyone even KNOW what the last DS game that came out was? Cause I sure as hell don't.

DS is a fucking joke, and I knew it was a fucking joke as soon as I saw the stupid thing get revealed.

Hmm, looks like most games are released in Japan only.
And the system seems to be doing pretty well there :
http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=4781

Quote:
Japanese hardware sales for April 18 - April 24:

Platform - This week's sales

NDS: 96,191
PS2: 33,080
PSP: 33,004
GBASP: 10,820
NGC: 8,329
GBA: 422
XBX: 112

Or

DS: 96,191
Everything else: 85,767

For comparison, here are the sales for April 11-17:

PS2 - 30,572
PSP - 28,950
NDS - 21,698
GBA SP - 10,529
NGC - 3,376
GBA - 397
XBX - 315

Yeah, just a bit different. :-p

The DS's uber-boosted sales can likely be attributed to a few things:

1) Two new color DSes came out on the 21st - Turquoise Blue and Candy Pink.
2) Nintendogs came out on the 21st and became the fastest selling DS title of all time in Japan.
3) Not as major, but Naruto DS was released on the 21st as well.

Even with these three events, the DS outselling all other systems combined is still quite surprising.

I do think the system has a lot of potential, gameplay wise. The problem is the developers are still experimenting (or too lazy/scared to really innovate? the current state of the video game industry doesn't help) and not making the most of it right now.
Obviously I'm waiting for more games to be released to make up my mind on wether it's worth buying a DS or not.

Wario Ware came out a few months back, Puyo Puyo Pop Fever got reviewed by IGN so that should be out today or so.

I want Another Code, Castlevania, and that court game for DS. Possibly Nintedogs.

There is an intriguing "surgery simulation" game called Caduceus, that has been announced to be published on the DS in Japan.

The list of upcoming games is actually quite long.
I'm anticipating Castlevania, and Advance Wars. And I expect a few other games will eventually stand out and force me tp get the system.

I thought the SP Advance was okay, I really don't see the need for the DS at all. Nobody was really asking for a twin screen, touch screen console - It's very gimmicky and I reckon Nintendo are just taking advantage of the fact they've ruled the handheld market for so long. They should stick to what they're good at and keep the SP Advance alive with some more classic Nintendo 2D platformers.

I like the idea of the wierd games that arent so gameplay mainstream, like nintendogs, the surgery game, the lawyer game, and nintendporn.

If they ride that wave out and create a niche they could hold a spot in the market. However if they keep doing shit like this with their dual screen possibility... then not.

You know they also made those for GBA. I betcha they're only localizing it for DS because the DS has nothing worth buying so they figure it has a chance overseas.

Hello ShadowMoses! I have fantastic news regarding the topic of this thread.

My touch screen still works on my DS lite. I’ve had it for 10 years.
I hope this removes your concerns about the screen!

My screens get dirty and I'm afraid to damage them so I never clean them. Other than that, they seem to work okay.

The first wave of DS games had control methods that were very harsh on the screen. The most severe controls I experienced during the lifespan of the handheld were in the Pokémon Ranger games, where you'd have to quickly scribble multiple circles around a moving Pokémon to catch them. Even then, the screen just got a little scuffed. You won't notice the scratches while the system is on and the actually functionality never dips. Same with my 3DS and New 3DS. The screen on the latter is a bit beaten up, and you can feel the stylus bumping against the light marks, but it doesn't affect gameplay and you can only see the marks while the thing is turned off. In fact, the two screens do more noticeable damage to one-another than the stylus does.

I still think of us making fun of the recently-revealed DS concept when I visited England in 2004.

In my memory, we’re mocking the DS while I’m sitting in the emergency waiting room to get an ankle cast, but I’m probably mashing up a couple different memories there.
