So.
Time for us to DO Paris. By request this thread has moved from ElJay to here...
I've told me housemates about this - not sure if any will be able to come due to time/monies/stuff, but will keep 'em in di loop.
It looks like the 16th & 17th Dec is the best weekend in terms of monies - need to with Alice if she is ok to come up that weekend.
Checked out flights, and they are about £85 per person (even BMI ), which is the same as Eurostar, booked in advance. So, I suggest we do teh 'Star (less commuting around, since Waterloo is more central for SGWH, and GDN is closer to Paris itself).
Eurostar offer kinda package deals as well... so get a bit of a discount when booking a hotel at the same time. For shits and giggles, I quite fancy staying at a Hotel in the Troc ;p it is about a tenner per person more expensive than a cheaper one, but what the hell!
So, thoughts? Comments? Should I get's it on Monday? |

Btw the hotel is not literally in the Troc, spoiler
I still think you're kaffir pricks for going when I'm away tbh
But yeah, Eurostar is best, GDN isn't that far from Paris XVI and you can take the 42 to the arcade where they have Supernova central Paris from there. |

Well, tbh the main reason why you can't be in the Troc is because the Troc in Paris is an 'Esplanade', not a building
[history fag]... The Real Trocadéro is in Spain tbh[/history fag] |

K, so, hm, where to start
(lot's of online discussions happened while I was catching some zzz's, uh?)
Er, actually I liked the december 2/3 idea somewhat better... especially coz it was more soonish, tbh (for the record, I've already finished one of the books you lent me on the train back home, might run short of them sooner than I thought )
december 16/17 is semi OK for me.
The good points:
- it's later thus cheaper
- I've got nothing planned so far on that day
- it's my Saint's day, yay me (as if I actually cared about that kind of shit )
The bad points:
- it's my Saint's day, :onion (long story short: potential stupid family drama FTW )
My emo-drama-queen of a dad actually does care about that kind of shit, and will probably start pouting and whining if he can't see me on that day (+ on Xmas, as I definetely don't want to be with them at that particular time of the year either, + on my birthday coz I've already something planned for New Year), and my mum will insist I make an effort so that she doesn't have to suffer through his bad mood, and that it's already bad enough that my sister won't be here and that my brother will say he's too busy (as if I'm not ), and I will be very tempted to tell them to fuck right off and get a fucking life, and not speak to them ever again (for a good month or so)... but will more probably eventually give in out of guilt coz I'm weak and stupid like that
... D:
K, actually, I'm not sure yet how things will turn out (hopefully not like this).
My best option would probably be to fully plan&pack my own busy schedule from now till 2007 and later on right now (ie, before the end of the week), then tell my parents when they're back from their current holidays the exact timeframe (hm, around december 9/10, maybe...) when they can see me if they want to and that there is no other option as all other days are booked, love it or leave it, coz I'm a busy person unlike them semi-retired lazy bums... Sounds like a plan
OK, all that shit is my own fucking business, obviously, just stating it to make things clear: as far as I'm concerned, my schedule is pretty fully open at the moment, but once things will start getting planned, there might be little room for adjustments, as I will have some OMG-improvisation-is-such-a-messy-business are-you-always-so-disorganized can't-you-make-up-your-mind-once-and-for-all you've-got-no-lessons-on-that-day-so-doesn't-that-mean-you're-not-working and-if-your-schedule-is-so-open-and-flexible-how-come-work-and-other-people-always-come-first-instead-of-us-btw emo-psycho-rigid people of my own to deal with
So, yeah, hm, decisions... Discussions first?
Both december 2/3 and december 16/17 are feasible at the moment. 2/3 sounds better to me just coz it's sooner and I'm a simple-minded person with a time horizon not exceeding one month, but tbh, if you can afford it (time&money wise), I'm up for both week-ends
... actually, I'm starting to think of a tentative plan involving some meeting in Paris from december 16 to december 17 (or even later the following week, since after all you've got some Xmas holidays after that, uh? And Paris is definetly worth staying there for longer than just a week-end)... directly followed by a trip to London? (not sure for how long. If I listened to me, I'd be up for staying till Xmas or something, but now that sounds just a bit unreasonable, when taking into account trivial matters such as work and budget, + whether you guys actually want me to go over there and ruin the weather again - not mentioning being a tramp sleeping on someone's sofa/bedroom floor/whatever and not paying a rent )
Sooo... still quite fuzzy, uh? I like the "dec 2/3 or 16/17? both, and some more, plz! " option, but it's easier for me to say that, of course, as I've got less time & budget constraints as far as Paris is concerned. You've got my take on things, but the choice isn't really up to me now.

Alice, just a few things:
- Don't give in to emotional blackmail.
- Chris will tell you himself but I know you're definitely welcome to spend Christmas at SGWH if you want.
- I think you should plan some meeting with Lucie in Paris so imo you should go both week-ends anyway. That and you've got awesome relatives there.
- What about going to Cannes sometime around Christmas/New Year's Eve? The fact that mum isn't talking to her mum anymore shouldn't stop you from visiting her. I kinda regret not going myself tbh and I'm definitely going to do my best to give her lots of news while I'm in HK/Shanghai. |

I agree with all that:
- actually I'm pretty determined to not give in to emo blackmail and have my own fun, priorities are quite well sorted out in my own mind, don't worry (that drama trailer of mine was more of motivational trick, like a way for me to remember what I didn't want seeing happening I'll do my best to anticipate getting stuck in such a situation, and to have thing go both my way and as smoothly as possible, hence the "Here is when you can come and see me. That is all. Deal with it" plan)
- I know that too but I prefer people telling me themselves coz I like to feel wanted, you know? (btw, aren't you a bit jealous I'm being a better French Girl than you so far, having them dirty kuffars come to visit Paris and all? )
- Yeah, I was thinking about meeting Lucie in Paris at some point. Should discuss that with local friends too. And all the same I don't think Lucie and co would mind meeting some of my awesome relatives, and/or favorite brit fags The more the merrier
- I was thinking about visiting my granny as well (mum and her don't talk anymore again? Didn't know about that latest plot twist in the family drama, must have missed an ep or two O_o), just need to think exactly when (like I said, already got a plan for New Year, but Xmas is still mostly unplanned... will travel around a lot if I'm to see everyone I want to. Perfectly feasible, but tight schedule again, and will require some serious early planning if I want reasonably priced tickets.) |

She's pissed off at her because she's rised the price of Paris apartment's rent in August or something. I'm pretty sure they haven't spoken since then... |

I actually texted Alice to ask if she wanted to come to London for Christmas today
Last year was great PLUS you get a nice present and to see the queen
I'm up for Paris any weekend in December (will just change my weekend off if it happens to clash with that).
The only drawback for me is that I currently have no moneys.
I'll have moneys at the time, but I won't be able to book ahead. Hope that doesn't raise the price too much
Staying at Troc is worth well more than a tenner in lols
I'm not going unless they have ITG tho _________________

Alice (Entr0pi3, not Yuka, though she is of course invited ;p),
Ok... so have thought about dates etc. From your post above, I'm assuming that 2nd/3rd is actually bettAer for you (though I am confused... it seems ambiguous), so in absence of other information going to book that weekend (so let me know if this is not the case). Sadly, noes Troc get's though it'll be alright, I'm sure. Do you want us to get a 3-bed room, btw, or will you have other accomodation?
Personally, I'd actually be up for coming to Paris both weekends ;p However, funds are limited for people, generally, so I guess this is not really an option... so Paris re-get's early 2G7? _________________ Dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aiiiii-a, dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aaaaa |

I'm the confused one, sorry about that
But indeed, at the moment 2/3 somewhat feels better to me coz
- that was the first week-end that got mentionned and I'm a psychorigid freak who can't adapt to change
- 16/17 is currently "beyond my time horizon" and even if I've still got nothing scheduled for sure on these days, I'm starting to form (over)complex fuzzy plans (Traveling Salesman style) involving it's many trips here and there around that time, but I still lack proper visibility, especially coz I have not contacted yet every person potentially involved (+ I need to make a serious time/bugdet estimate beforehands)
I guess that's why I feel somewhat unconfortable with the 16/17 option at the moment. Though objectively it would probably be a perfectly feasible (maybe even bettAer) choice. I'm just rubbish at making up my mind when under the feeling I need more data
So, it's up to you, really. Eventually I will most probably end up going to Paris on both week-ends, actually
My highly subjective reasons for slightly prefering 2/3 over 16/17 at the moment, are definitely not as important as things such as budget constraints for you, + accomodation options. Now that's a tough one, that deserves attention.
Accomodation wise, I can normally perfectly stay at my brother's place, but in that case it would be bettAer if your hotel is nearby (you know what, the good thing about the hotel @ Troc thing is that the Trocadero is only 2 stations away from my brother's flat, basically you just need to cross the Seine on a foot-bridge).
However, if noes (reasonably priced) hotel nearby enough, I guess I'd rather go with the 3-bed room option, will make the process of finding way back home after getting drunk on saturday night waaaaay much easier for everyone
You know what? Maybe I should do the hotel-booking thing (if you have no special train+hotel deal, that is. Or special extra cheap hotel deals I'm not aware of). I'm not a Paris expert, but I'm not a total nub either, so I'm probably more qualified than any of you for that part of the job. Just gimme a budget estimate of how much you can afford on that stuff. I've already done some research, and found that most cheap 3-bed rooms are priced around 80-90€ a night (then it quickly goes up to 150€ and -much- more depending on quality/location). That'd be about 30€/£20 per person, ie probably cheaper than if you guys went for 2 single rooms or 1 double room. So, you do the train ticket booking, and I take care of the hotel booking, how about that? |

Hm, well, difficult to tell. Normally it will raise the price for sure
For instance, at the moment, looks like a round trip on december 2/3 would cost around 190€ (wtf, London-Paris-London seems to cost significantly more than Paris-London-Paris that one would be closer to 150€) while a similar trip next week-end (nov 11/12) would cost around 220€ (though sometimes you can get lucky and get cheap last-minute deals) |

Actually my guess is that there are more Londoners going to Paris on week-ends, than Parisians going to London, which means the cheap tickets for brits get sold out sooner.
Christmas plans still very fuzzy
Got a budget problem to solve (still waiting for the €2000+ the university owes me), + need more info from various people |

Right. Sorry I've been out of contact for a while.
We can do 2nd/3rd, and it will be £233 total for Eurostar (so just under £117 each, prices have gone up since I first checked, as expected). This ok with you Chris? Just let me know if it is, and I'll get's it for us both, otherwise if it is too expensive it will invariably be cheaper to wait till the 16th (but only £15 each, tbh)
Alice: Yes, it would be delightful if you can book accomodation, as you know Paris 556x better than either of us; how would you like me to get peas across to you, though? _________________ Dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aiiiii-a, dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aaaaa |

Cool, will book tixxx tomorrow lunchtime.
Re: Christmas dinner, where do you reckon we should go? If we book a week in advance, anywhere will be ok I reckon (Penderel's Oak?)
Also, not sure who is coming, exactly - any chance that you could post an LJ entry to find out (as you have more people on your friend's list than me ;p) - once we work out then answer to those two questions I can book it \o/ _________________ Dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aiiiii-a, dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aaaaa |

Over-worked club?
K, I'll do the hotel booking then. I'll try to find a good compromise between location, price, and room quality (in that order of priority, I think)
Do you have any particular requests/constraints? Like, stuff you'd like to do/places you'd like to visit (I'll try to think up a tour), a max price threshold, limited tolerance to shabby rooms...?
| Quote: |

Hm, hotel booking won't be that expensive (less than a Eurostar round trip) so I won't be in a hurry. Besides, I can't really think of any cheap quick safe way to transfer the money: they all involve extra fees, and a delay of some sort.
So, just pay me back in real paper money when you'll be in France, uh? (or you could use Rachel's special technic, and buy me a things or two on Amazon my wishlist on their site is empty at the mo, though ) |

Sounds good - thank you. Open agenda from my point of view... I'm happy to see whatevAer touristy stuff there is close to whereevAer the hotel is. Cart before horse I know but...
And I'm not fussed if the hotel is a real shithole; it is only for 1 night.
I'm sure Chris will post if he feels differently about either of these

I think she's seen more than one.
Not too bothered really tbh. I'm sure after going to Paris once, I'll just go again and again (though maybe not to the extent of you and Londres ). |

K, looks like I should book for 5 people? Reasonably priced hotel all seem to be located near the Gare du Nord, which is a bit far from typical tourist places (the most famous ones are all located all the way along the Seine), but not too much, since you can get from there to the Tour Eiffel in something like 30 minutes by tube or bus, so it's not such a big problem (Central Paris is not that big, and the public transport network is quite good)
Also, near the Gare du Nord lies a somewhat famous touristic area: Montmartre (think Amélie - except not, real life is not like the movie, spoilAer... but the area is still nice - esp the cemetery ) and the Opera district (famous for stuff like the Moulin Rouge, and Place Pigalle and its many sex shops, etc.). A lively place for sure, esp. at night, and supposedly not too far from one of Paris arcades.
So... I happen to have found a deal for 2 hotel rooms, 5 persons, grand total of €182.94, limited offer, continental breakfast included... Should I book right now?
Here is the hotel : http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187147-d264820-Reviews-Migny_Hotel_Opera_Montmartre-Paris_Ile_de_France.html |

Get's! Sounds wonderful.
Be eternally grateful if you could book it - it's a deal, it's a steal, it's sale of the f'kin century!
Once again, thanks for this Alice <3 _________________ Dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aiiiii-a, dum dum dum dum ai-ai-aaaaa |

Done!
Don't thank me until we actually get to see the rooms, though
Also, I don't deserve much credit for this, as I must say the hotel search engine service provided by Expedia is pretty damn fucking efficient. Though the maps suck a bit. But just need to cross-reference the info with Mappy + the RATP site for tube info, and voilà!
You guys (and myself) will probably need to get unlimited-travel tickets on the central Paris transport network (bus, tube, etc., around €14 per person for 2 days), but that can wait till you arrive in Paris.
... Oh, I guess you could also thank my university for being so slow when it comes to paying back my travel expenses, forcing me to develop special cheap travel survival skills |

Thank you, anyway!
It doesn't matter what the hotel is really like, since it is only for one night, and is really to avoid a bunch of drunken Brits (+"tour guide") falling foul of the gendarmerie whilst wandering the streets ;p

WTF?
Oh. All right

British meanings
"Faggot"
The word faggot is occasionally used in parts of Britain to denote a silly or foolish person, presumably as an extension of its earlier association with old women. [...]
The term is also used, especially in Wales and the Black Country, to refer to a kind of pork meatball covered in gravy. See Faggot (food).
"Fag"
In British English the term fag (though not faggot) most commonly means a cigarette. [...] In Britain "fag" is still a very common slang term for a cigarette.
"Fag" was a term used for a junior boy who acted as a servant for a senior boy at Eton College, near Eton, Berkshire, and other British public schools. This practice, known as "fagging", was ended in the 1970s. [...]
The American Meaning in Britain
The words fag and faggot have become understood as an Americanism in British English, primarily due to its use in films and television series imported from the United States. When Labour MP Bob Marshall-Andrews was heard using the word in a bad-tempered exchange in the House of Commons lobby in November 2005, most listeners assumed that he meant to question the target's sexuality. |
That was SG's Cultural Minute, brought to you by the IntAerweb
I'm sure my fav brit fags (tm) would have a few other definitions for the word, anyway, uh?

Personally, I prefer the definition of a bundle of tied-up sticks and twigs, often used for fuel.
Alternatively, it can refer to a (IMO) disgusting pork-based product, produced in the UK by Mr. Brain.
But meaning 42 from Cooper-Hinkley's unabridged dictionary is the one I prefer the best:
| Quote: |
42: A zealot or fanboy, originally connected with Japanese-culture ('lol, Jap Fag'), but later extended to any kind of language, culture and/or video-game related shennanigans, ex. 'My god, fuse is such a Bemani fag o_O' |

"OK, if you have any sense of quality and any sense of self dignity do not go here."
The first question we asked Andy and Lap was whether they had any self dignity... the universal answer for us all appears to be "no", so we are ok ;p
"It is in Pigalle which for the unknowing, as we were, is the red light district in Paris."
:gets
"DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL. Unless you want to be ripped off. I know there are some criminals around the Pigalle area but i did not expect our hotel manager to be the biggest one!"
And to balance that:
"The location is the best one in Paris ( 10min from sacree coeur and 15 from opera), rooms clear and newly redecorated, staff helpfull and friendly."
But this one is my favourite:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g187147-d264820-r4131061-Migny_Hotel_Opera_Montmartre-Paris_Ile_de_France.html
Paraphrased: "This is an awesome hotel, flawless in every way, will definitely go back there again (in fact, am taking the family next year!), it has great replay value. I give it 1G"
o_O
People make me smile, sometimes.
