So has anyone else seen this? I've seen it twice, and I'm still willing to see it again. I know there was a thread about it on S7, but it didn't seem to get enough attention.

Without giving too much away:

A small-time actor named Andrew Largeman gets a call from his father with some bad news. Apparently, his mother had drowned in the bathtub. A quick scene reveals that he is under heavy medication, and has affected him by hindering him to have any emotions. Coming back to his hometown after 9 years, he attends his mother's funeral, and finds his old buddy Mark, now a gravedigger. Later he meets with Samantha, who recalls one of his TV roles, and both of them quickly become attached.

I find most people say that the first half of the movie is somewhat slow, but does get progressively better, and I agree completely with that. I really enjoyed Large and Sam's relationship, and how it felt completely real. The humor was great and though some of them were almost farfetched, they added to the joke. What really hooked me onto this was the story twist:

Largeman, when he was 9, had pushed his mother in anger, who tripped over an open dishwasher door with a defective hinge. It was then his father decided to put him on medication to suppress his anger, and sent him to boarding school when he was 16, believing the environment his son was living in wasn't good.

But of course, the ace of this film was the music. It all just sounded so amazingly good and fit the scenes like a glove. In fact the reason I initially wanted to see the movie was because it featured the songs of a duo called Frou Frou, who I listen to.

Overall, this is a must-see movie. Its a simple movie, basically a story about someone beginning to live life, yet Zach Braff manages to make it unique and refreshening.

The best quote would have to be...

Mark: I'll kill that motherfucker!
Andrew: ...Pun intended?

I'd see it, but I can't convince any of my friends that it's actually a good movie. I thought I could at least get the female friends to go watch it. :(

I saw it, I enjoyed it but after Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine, I've started to get annoyed with all the art fag movies.

I still need to see Eternal Sunshine. From what I hear (which is good), it could easily overthrow Garden State as my favorite film of the year.

Eternal Sunshine is still my favorite film this year, followed by Spidey 2 (though I don't consider that the second best film this year).

Eternal Sunshine bumped itself to a position next to Fight Club for my favorite movie evar. It won't win any awards, but it fucking should. It's the kind of film that should clean up at the Oscars instead of slow-motion buckets of shit like Return of the King.

this movie is wonderful. i really enjoyed watching it.

but i do have to agree with the recent release of 'indie' movies. ppl feel so special when they say they watch 'indie' movies. its the elitest in everyone.
a movie is just a fooking movie. i dont see why the artsy fartsy types feel they need to have their own type of movie to make them feel special.

the trend has become anti-trend. die.

Great movie. Certainly one of the better ones of the year. Part of the reason it is so successful, as others mentioned, was the soundtrack. Not the type of music I usually listen to, but simply amazing and fitting perfectly to the theme. (The Shins own hard, apparently). Great performances all around, but especially from Portman and the inventor guy. I also liked the way at the end they made the guy living in the boat seem completely normal. I was expecting a joke, with a totally wacky character, but that guy was one of the most "normal" characters in the movie. All in all, great movie, easily my favorite of the year so far, and one of my favorites of all time.

Actually, that's the reason I saw it last night. I was going to see Hero, but, there's torrents of that out everywhere, but no Garden State torrent.

I'd definately recommend the OST. Real calm, chill stuff.

Despite what George Lucas would have you think, Portman's a damn good actress.

yes you're right

the 28th eternal comes out. and it easily overthrows garden state.

i thought garden state was great too. the ending coulda been better in my opinion, but i still thought it was cool.

and i concur about the lameness of people claiming culture because they watch indie movies. just watch them and shuddap

RESURRECTION!

I FINALLY saw this fucking movie, and it was pretty good. The standout was, as has been mentioned, the soundtrack. The movie itself was uneven and overextended at points, but very earnest and likable, and Zach Braff obviously shows a lot of promise.

And say what you will about Natalie (I know I do often enough), I thought she was really good here.

Regardless of where the story went, the layout or any outside elements, the actors played their parts flawlessly, which is always refreshing.
