Comes out in Japan in July for 3ds and ps4. I want both but I have to make a compromise so I'm getting 3ds for jp release and ps4 for usa release because I'm a DQ slut and I have to support the series. I'm really hoping that the niche japanese games becoming successful for some reason bug bites DQ11 when it comes to ps4 world wide. The series really deserves it.

This will be my first DQ I play at release in Jp. Looking forward to it.

Seems to me like DQ games are already successful. I mean, they're hugely successful in Japan. Less so in the US, obviously, and I don't see DQ ever rising quite to the level it's at in Japan in the US. Still it seems pretty successful. They're certainly big on getting the remakes over here. I don't think it's quite at the level of FF here, but still pretty big. Probably bigger than most of the "niche RPGs" that have become successes.

Dragon Quest is already given a lot of push by Square over here in Europe (since the release of IX), but I can't see the series ever reaching the levels of popularity it has in Japan here in the West. While I enjoy the series and consider myself a fan (I played VIII in Japanese and even bought a Japanese 3DS for Dragon Quest Theatrhythm), I think it's too rooted in tradition and anime-like to make it BIG big (as in a Final Fantasy or Zelda level of popularity). Saying that, I don't see the series' popularity decreasing. XI will gain new fans, but I don't see it being a huge leap.

Nope. I learned Japanese just to play rpgs in Japanese, notably DQ games.

I don't think DQ will get to that level in the US. But I'd be satisfied if it does as well as Persona 5 is doing.

And that's not true. Dragon Quest games bomb. Dragon Quest VII remake, which people wanted for years sold like 30k units (this is bad). It took three years for the game to be released in English because it was such a monetary risk (large script) that they didn't want to do it. But people kept requesting it get released and sending letters to SE HQ and shit. It still bombed. Anyways, the series future in the west is dependent on the success of 11. DQ games bomb here unless it's something like VIII ps2 or IX.

It has character designs by Akira Toriyama, the creator of the most popular anime in the west, Dragon Ball. So I don't think that's it. Persona 5 just saw massive success and it's anime as fuck. So it's can't be it. They tend to not advertise the Toriyama ties in the west, which doesn't help their case and is admittedly really fucking stupid.

Is that sarcasm? because I remember having that crazy notion for suikogaiden and that went down in flames. Did you take a class?

No, I'm serious. DQ7 remake put me over the edge. I never took a class and learned through self teaching.

Btw the Suikogaiden's have been translated in to english by a fan if you want to play them. Playing the Suikogaiden's in Japanese would be tough. Some advanced JP in Suikoden games with a very specific vocab.

Yeah I know. My sister had it downloaded on a laptop.

Anyway impressive. I once had a notebook dedicated to translating Suikogaiden, but when I attempted it looking up the more complicated japanese letters was damn near impossible.

Actually I have this faint memory of telling you I bought suikogaiden back in the day and you thinking that was hardcore fandom

I expect I'll take to this much more than Shenmue. Not that I'll have terribly much time as September is end of fiscal year crunch time.

One problem I have with Dragon Quest games is actually finishing them. Something always comes out and draws me away from it and I never go back

I would if I had a 3DS. I’ll just wait for whatever real Pokémon game is coming to Switch in 2019.

No idea what it'll be called now. The naming convention went astray when we reached 3DS.

I haven’t played Shenmue, but my impression is that “better than Shenmue” is not high praise.

The game is really good but I’m playing it really slowly becuase I’m streaming it all. Perhaps I should stop streaming it. Almost finished Shenmue II btw. Just on a hard boss fight now.

I haven't been watching the streaming because spoilers. Also, I'm not sure DQ would be very fun to watch.

I’ve had up to 18 people watching at the same time. It seems like a good game to stream. I do voices for all the characters etc.
