So I went online looking for a game to make a thread about such as Front Mission 5 which doesnt even appear to have a US release in mind. But I found I didnt feel like hyping any game I didnt trust and I dont trust anything till Ive played it.

Anyway instead of looking to the future, let's look to the past.
At some of those not so mainstream games you loved or perhaps it was supposedly mainstream but nobody you knew really bought it.

True motive: Stuff I probably dont have and might want to buy

Any game for any console is fair game here.

You are joking about Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Dizzy, surely Luke?

*eveyone* I knew had them. They were great games, but were mainsteam too (alongside Thunderforce IV, Sonic The Hedgehog etc.).

I remember St. Dragon and Turrican (had 'em both on my Amiga - I really like Turrican).

You want non-mainsteam? Spectrum/Amstrad CPC464 games Rebelstar (not to be confused with the recent GBA remake) and Laser Squad (both by the Gollup borthers who went on to write the awesome UFO) are fantastic.

Its quite hard for me to believe that any of these were that mainstream (especially Dizzy). Remember I was very young when these were out so non of them seemed such a big thing.

When I finally ditched the spectrum and got a Sega megadrive, I quickly fell inlove with columns

My favourite mainstream on the MD was sonic3 joined with sonic and knuckles. The first game to completely mesmerise me was of course was streetfighter.

I was 8 when it came out.

Dizzy sold *very* well back in 1986 (it was a budget game that sold for £1.99 on Spectrum/C64/Amstrad/Schneider), and demos featured on the cover of several games magazines. It also spearheaded the Oliver Twins and the little-known company Codemasters to fame.

It'd be pretty hard for me to consider SoR anything other than mainstream. I've enjoyed playing it and I've never even once owned a Sega console...

Everybody claims to love Dizzy.
It probably wasn't released in France or something.
I personally wasn't into games back in those days but I have seen and heard a lot of the game since and understand it's appeal.

I do love Dizzy (somewhere in the loft at my Mum's place is my collection of CPC464 tapes, including most of the Dizzy games. I don't expect many of them work anymore, though ) ... so much so that I inflict it on my students when teaching them!

I was more into games 18 years ago than I am now, tbh.

I realize we're mentioning 'forgotten' gems but if that's your only criteria, then you could almost name any game thatís a few years old regardless of how wildly popular it was when it came out.

It's just my interpretation, but when I hear 'gem' I think of something that's good/great but never really caught on with the mainstream audience.

You can't pretend they're not correlated anyway. If a game was extremely popular in it's time, "forgotten" is a truly dubious epithet. Most likely everyone remembers it, you shithead! Frust

If we're being on topic, the Way of the Samurai series is a trashy cornball series that I enjoyed the hell out of when it was first released on the PS2. I was playing the fourth in the series last year when I needed something to fill the void in my unemployment and it was still fun for a game that liked to crash on the last part of the "best ending" playthrough.

I forget what year the PS2 was becoming old hat though.

The original Nier has become one of my favorite games of all time, although it was panned by almost every news outlet back in the day. To this day I don't understand why that was. I feel the gaming landscape changed significantly during the early PS3 years, and I have the feeling that Nier fell victim to that change. A game like that in the PS2 era would have been a classic I'm sure. That said, I read that it gets some more acclaim through the fairly successful Nier:Automata, which I haven't played yet.

I recently played "I have no Mouth and I must Scream" which has been on my list for a long time. Absolutely loved it!

Also Albion, a German RPG with an awesome atmosphere.

If we go back in time further, I feel I have to mention Terranigma (SNES), which was awesome, but I think didn't receive a US release.

I have a few Commodore Amiga games that I used to love back in the day:

- Moonstone
- Burntime (boy was I bad at this game, but man, the atmosphere...)
- Gobliiins and Gobliins 2
- International Karate +
- Chaos Engine
