The RDM posted his cat pictures in the other thread. What follows is a picture-free list of animals he has. He may take picture requests.

Dogs
Josephine - 10 year-old Scottish Terrier.
Vanessa - 3-year-old (her birthday was yesterday) miniature Schnauzer

Cats
Linus - 18-year-old black cat who runs operations around these parts.
Frank - 12-year-old grey and white cat, see LPTPW.
Wren - 11-year-old weird grey and orange calico thingy cat. Not doing great just now.
Whitey Jr. - 9-year-old white cat with two grey dots on her head and heterochromia iridis. Very scared
HazMat - 9-year-old white/black/brown cat who looks like she's wearing eyeliner and is as soft as a bunny. She is Whitey's sister.
Sebastian - 2-year-old fluffy black monstrosity. Very skittish. Likes the RDM's wife.
Eleanor - Evil kitten of doom. She is brown and black striped with white on her stomach. Appears to have super short legs.

That's a lot of fishes. What types are they? How do you keep outdoor fish in the winter?

We like animals.

Koi, Comets and Shubunkins.

The pond they live in outside is 54 inches deep. They go down to the bottom and go kind of dormant when the water gets cold. The filter keeps running, so the top never freezes all the way over.

full on allergic? or like.. first time allergic? everytime we had a new cat the wife had major eyes running stuffy allergic reactions, but after having the cat a month the symptoms would go away. she can now face plant in cat belly.

but when visiting someone with a cat, if too much cat time she'll start all over again.

Allergic reactions every time I'm close to a cat for a while. I've never had my own cat to test that.

Yeah. I thought allergies usually tended to get worse over time.

I don't think there's a point to allergies. They're basically a malfunction, aren't they?

Yes, usually. First exposures are often mild or even totally asymptomatic. Re-exposure is what usually triggers more severe reactions as you have more discrete exposures. It works great when that exposure is an infectious agent, but the process is prone to false positives like cats and peanuts that are only infectiously adorable and delicious, respectively.

But our immune systems are tricky. Some allergies will go away spontaneously, others stick around forever. Sucky part is, we still don't fully understand what initial signaling pathways that cause our bodies to react to otherwise benign chemical markers, otherwise, we might have figured out a better way to prevent or reverse allergies that don't involve a shit-ton of Benadryl or months of allergy shots.

If I were to grossly generalize, our white blood cells are SUPER racist, chemically-speaking. If it hasn't seen it before, it's likely to assume it's dangerous and reacts accordingly. It's the biological equivalent of an overall-wearing, shotgun-toting redneck sitting on a porch shouting "WAE DON'T LAHK STRANGURS 'ROUND HUR!" But if it's seen it enough times, it's more like a discretely racist politician that says, "I have lots of friends that come from peanuts."

I enjoyed your explanation.

Though I'm still confused how eightman's first-time allergy business fits into this.

Perhaps its like allergy treatment shots. Low doses of allergens over time and building up until you develop a desensitization. Works for pollen grass etc. Not so much for food allergies though.

Nope! But being in Washington, DC while you were in Canada is pretty far to be fair.

Only person I remember who had it worse was Jeremy at a camping fieldtrip. He literally could no open his eyes because they were crusted over. *shudder*

I had a reaction like that to poison ivy twice in my life, so I avoid the stuff like the plague. I don't know if "crusted over" would be the correct phrasing for me, but I was puffed up and inflamed enough that I could only open my eyes a little. I had to take cortisone or something to bring it down.

There must be some commonality. Were there bears in the pub?

I thought those fake smilies were banned?

To get back on topic, I wouldn't mind having a couple of pets but it's difficult when living in an apartment. We had a couple of fishies in Brooklyn but they died pretty quickly. Now we're considering a dog and/or a cat but waiting for the right timing. Also, not sure which breeds of dogs would be fine with living mostly in-doors. Walking a dog wouldn't be much of a problem in the area, except that it gets really cold in winter.

My dog wears his booties on walks when the temperature goes below 30 degrees. Took him a couple days to stop doing that swiggity-swooty walk, but he willingly wears them along with his Hurtta winter coat.

My neighbor has a husky-mix and a Bernese, and those two will play in the snow for hours without any kind of clothing. Though neither of them would do well in an apartment.
