The SNES Rom websites are badly designed and full of broken links.

That's why I'd just go for an all-ROMs torrent. Even if you only want like 1% of the games.

I was considering getting the ROMs as part of the pain.

The overall process was under an hour. People are queuing for longer in NYC to grab a SNES Mini right now.

Have you tried out any of the modded on games yet Damien?

Do you have any not released in America games on your list?

I tired to add some more games to my console last week, but for some reason had problems. There's a new fan translation of Super Famicon Wars though. May be worth getting!

Edit: Never mind. Got SFW on it now!

I haven't played Advance Wars in a long time. I remember Advance Wars having cutesy children characters. It didn't have Hitler (sorry, "Hetler"), did it?

No it definitely had cutesier characters than Hetler. I enjoyed that style, though.

Yeah. Its safe.

The only thing you have to watch out for is using the save states when you have a ton of games installed might auto deselect games to make room for the save state files on hakchi.

So best to delete your save states after finishing a game and dont super max out the memory even if you could push the limit real close on installed games.

It's more about the size of the games than game total. You start putting Gameboy Advance games on there and they'll eat the memory up real quick.

Why are Gameboy Advance games more memory intensive than SNES games?

They don't have better graphics than SNES games from what I've seen.

I think maybe as time went on and the storage capacity for a cart was increased, companies put less effort into compression.

Too bad, since they're lower res and have worse sound quality.

How much storage is in the SNES Mini?

Hello.

WaWard the computer engineer here.

Probably one of the factors is the address space.

SNES used a 16 bit address space
GBA a 32 bit address space

Meaning that you wont necessarily have double the memory consumption, but some data types will be doubled unless optimized.

But Im presuming thats one of many factors, but harder to know without the details.

Compression might have an impact on memory but it would mostly be on CPU time. I dont think its a huge factor in this.

Why wouldn't compression have an effect on memory? Isn't that the purpose of compression?

On the storage, sure.

In RAM, it needs to be decompressed to something that takes up more memory than the compressed asset.

On modern devices, probably less of an issue, but on primitive devices like this, Id bet they had to do all of it in software.

I thought storage was the issue in getting it on the SNES classic. Didn't know RAM was an appreciable factor.

The resell prices of these are now below retail price. Good news for non-scalpers (I'm fully aware of the irony, considering I preordered two and sold one on)

I got my actual SNES back from an ex last year (been without it since 2004). The mini is FAR more convenient. It has FFVI (never released here) and you can rewind battles that turn out shitty.

I booted up my NAS for the first time in years to get my eleat ROMS to hack it while the doom weather is here.

I appear to have misplaced my snes Roms. And Idk where to start looking for them anymore, on the account that I am no longer 20 years old. Sad

I have re-started a collection after stupidly selling off most of my stuff years ago.

After getting most of the games that I wanted for reasonable prices I am now slowly moving towards make reproductions since some of the game are way too expensive to get as an original.

This adds the benefit that I can get fan-translations into German to play SNES games with my daughter.

Yeah, I know, I could play on an emulator, but where's the fun in that?

I went to a friend's place on Saturday. They'd made an emulation box, but it seemed to mostly be loaded with sports and racing games that look and play ghastly now. PS1 Toca was awful as expected, but aside from that, other games that should have been kinda' good were glitchy or laggy. Daytona had fucked up sounds and Crazy Taxi was skipping frames. Makes me appreciate the ease and quality of the SNES Mini more (as people always rattle on about making an emulation machine with a Raspberry Pi when it's mentioned).

To be fair, emulating SNES is a lot easier to not screw up compared to emulating PS1.

I remember playing an early emulation of FFIV, before they'd worked out transparencies. You couldn't see past the fog in the first dungeon

Yeah I remember shit like that. But we are old men. Im sure anything you can install a respectable SNES emulator on now will work well.

Back in I guess early 1999 I bought Bleem!, a commercial PSX emulator for Windows. It was pretty crap. I got an actual PSX later that year when FFVIII came out. 9/9/99 baby!

At that point in time, I either was unable to or didn't know how to. This is the 90's we're talking about though.

Also, anybody who's tried the recent Mega Drive/Genesis mini (a quieter and cheaper release than the Nintendo ones) will know that 16 bit emulation can still go wrong.

They announced a new one last week. They promise it wont be shit this time. Unlike the previous 3 attempts.

I didn't even know about that at the time of posting Shock
To be fair, most of the games that will probably end up on it will probably have been on that mostly ignored last gen (PS3/360) Mega Drive Collection disc. My favourite game on the system never shows up in any of the compilations.
