I like songs. I like new songs. And I know there are lots of good songs that other people are listening to that I have yet to discover. So let's share! Yay for expanding musical horizons! This is a thread to share song-by-song what you are listening to.

Follow-up discussion and such is welcome, but the intent is to have specific piecemeal song links/suggestions that people can go listen to right away without much thought/sifting.

To start off: if you haven't heard Genghis Khan by Miike Snow yet you really ought to. Video is fun too.

There is a joint album by Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett coming out in 10 days, called "Lotta Sea Lice". So far, two songs have been released and both are great: Over Everything and Continental Breakfast.

Also just found out about Sibylle Baier, whose album "Colour Green" was recorded at home in the early 1970s but was only put out widely in 2006 after being heard by J Mascis. It's really great stuff. Folky, quite Leonard Coheny, very nicely sung and recorded.

I listened to that Mike Snow song. Not really my thing, but also not a terrible thing I'd begrudge others enjoying. And believe me, I do begrudge others their pleasures!

You cut the spam potential by listing an entire year's worth of music at once! boo

Echosmith - Future Me

Echosmith are cute. They do that "I wish that I could be like the cool kids" song which is probably the only one most people have heard from them. They started as a youtube cover band in their tweens. I went back and listened to a bunch of their stuff a while back and was impressed with their dedication and growth. Happy that they're able to keep making music!

Oh I know something. We are seeing a band (a solo act really) called Japanese Breakfast this weekend. I haven't listened to her a ton, but she's good. I'm listening to her now, in fact!

Relevant to SG because part of the promotion of the new album was a 16-bit style RPG you can play online called Japanese BreakQuest.

I know a lot of people who listen to music mainly through YouTube. It's weird. I do usually use it to share songs, though.

I started using Apple Music a month ago, and otherwise I download mp3s like an old man. And listen to records, like an old man/not-so-old cool dude.

I did a trial of Apple Music when it first came out and it re-tagged all of the songs from my annual "New That's What I Call 2Gx" compilations (that I've been making since 2005). I was so glad that I hadn't set up Apple Music to fuck up the stuff on my computer as well.

I mainly use an iTunes managed classic iPod to listen to music out and about, and my computer at home. I vary rarely use Spotify, but have recently made a playlist on that for the benefit of others.
I find YouTube a bit of a clunky and over the top delivery method for music, especially when you throw ads and platform restrictions into the mix.

An iTunes-managed iPod (+ iTunes on the laptop) has been my go-to for ages too. Getting Apple Music was motivated by my barely ever using the laptop anymore and thus finding I was never downloading new music or updating my iPod's selections. Spotify would've sufficed as well, I just went with Apple Music. Anything that lets me listen to full albums, which is normally how I prefer to listen to music.

Linkin Park - Invisible

I'm enjoying Linkin Park's recent stuff. Though, still too soon.

I mostly listen to music on youtube these days. I'm a weirdo I guess. It actually has a half-decent ability to create ongoing mix playlists (though there are certain songs that pop up all the time no matter what). And yeah, for sharing purposes it's easy.

I should probably try out Spotify now that we actually have it up here. But for so long I was used to it being unavailable in Canada that I kind of wrote it off and forgot about it.

I'll repeat myself and re-link to The Most Awesome Thing On The Internet for anyone who missed it last time I posted it.
(it's a group clearing Panic Attack with 100% on Rock Band)
(you can skip straight to the instrumental if you just want the highlights)

At this moment I happen to be listening to In the Presence of Enemies, also by Dream Theater. but for fun variety in the Scandinavian metal genre, I will recommend:

Sonata Arctica: (intense emotions, poetic lyrics, haunting melodies, wide range of styles)
In the Dark
Take One Breath
As if the World Wasn't Ending
Half a Marathon Man
Tonight I Dance Alone

Tyr (chant-y manly Viking-themed metal ballads)
Valkyrjan
Sinklars Visa
Evening Star
Nine Worlds Of Lore

Falconer: (Tolkien/Fantasy metal ballads)
For Life and Liberty
The Past Still Lives On
Grimborg

Blind Guardian (Tolkien/Fantasy Speed Metal)
Fly (tells the story of Peter Pan!)

And here's some of my favorite covers!
Apocalyptica - Spiral Architect (Black Sabbath)
Sonata Arctica - Wind Beneath My Wings (Roger Whittaker)
Demons and Wizads - White Room (Cream)
Sonata Arctica - Fade to Black (Metallica)
Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera

It would be nice if everyone who listed album would pick the songs they like best off of it and add links to their post. Getting YouTube to play a full album can be difficult.

I can't claim to be a huge Tragically Hip fan (no problem with their music really, but like many Canadians, I heard a few of their songs WAY too many times in the 90s), but I am sad to report that lead singer Gord Downie is dead. Sad

In memoriam, I do recommend his solo album Coke Machine Glow. Check!

Or if you're not Canadian but want to have the experience of being one, listen to the Tragically Hip song "Ahead By A Century" on repeat for the rest of the day.

I hadn't paid attention to Weird Al since the 90s until his Mandatory Fun album in 2014. He has SERIOUSLY improved since his early years. It used to be that his songs were mostly to annoy you and make fun of real songs. Now his songs are actually really enjoyable to listen to while providing amusing nutty lyrics. Also he's started doing "Style Parodies" where he makes a completely new song in the style of some artist and sounds so good it really could be one of theirs.

Weird Al - Mandatory Fun
Mission Statement (in the style of Crosby Stills & Nash)
With My Own Eyes (in the style of Foo Fighters)

So after listening to these, I went out and downloaded the whole discography of Crosby Stills & Nash (& Young) and a dozen hours later concluded that I actually liked Weird Al's song better. It took all the good music elements from their entire discography and condensed it into one song.

Meanwhile, I'm really digging the Foo Fighters song too. (and I'm really saddened that nobody made an AMV out of it yet) And I sent it to a friend of mine, who happens to hate Foo Fighters and he was like "Ugh, this sounds just like Foo Fighters. I can't listen to this." So there you have it, Weird Al successfully stealing other people's sound and not having to pay them royalties because he wrote an original :-)

Oh, and I always love his parodies of the videos:
Pharrell Williams - Happy
Weird Al - Tacky

He's always done those 'style' parodies. I don't think his new stuff is really much of a departure.

He's always done those 'style' parodies. I don't think his new stuff is really much of a departure.

(reviews wikipedia) Well true, but the ones from before the late-90s were mostly genre parodies and the ones for specific artists weren't so close that you would think they were an actual song by that artist. Well, except the Beach Boys one.

Anyway, I do think the last three albums were significantly stronger than his past work in terms of being listenable music.
