Well, let's blame that on his meditation retreat, he's probably decided that life is better without the intarweb.

Question for Calbrena: do you think French numbers are as goofy as they objectively are?

I mean, 96 = four twenty sixteen? Come on now.

EDIT: Incidentally, the date tomorrow is four twenty seventeen, or 97. If you use the stupid MM/DD/YY order anyway. And French numbers.

As a French speaker, I don't need to think at all when using those numbers. In fact, I'm way more puzzled by the "septante", "huitante" and "nonante" used in some French speaking countries.

Now, as an educator, I do find them ridiculous, and I've even made some videos to try and help my foreign students memorise them.

There is a logic to those numbers though: afaik, celts used to count by 20s, using their fingers and toes.

Counting using toes is pretty hard. Kind of strange that was ever a thing.

It's pretty crazy though when you think about it. It's like well I've used up all my fingers so I'll bring my feet up into my hands and start counting on my toes or something? It seems like it would be much less work and make more sense to just loop back around on your fingers and just remember that you've counted to 10 already.

Maybe that's what they were doing. After all, I guess you could count as you "open" your hand, and as you "close" it.

The dancing monkey is super! Where is it from?

I didn't realize what day it is today. I'm so out of it. I thought it was "later" (like next week or the week after) despite knowing that this Saturday is the 22nd (long-standing plans).

The monkey is from Mother 3 (GBA sequel to Earthbound). Great game!

On Saturday we are standing in line for a couple hours before a record store opens hoping to get the one copy of the Kevin Morby single they're going to get for Record Store Day (an event we usually avoid). Yaaaaay!

Speaking of British TV, we just finished watching the third and final season of Broadchurch. The first season was very good; a boy is killed in a small town, Olivia Colman and a very grumpy David Tennant investigate, everyone seems suspicious.

But the second season was kind of a travesty. It centred around the trial following the case--interesting in theory, but it felt like almost no research was done on how the legal system works, and it had all these stupid side plots too. It was amusingly bad, but disappointing after the first season.

I wasn't expecting much out of the third season, but it was really good--maybe even better than the first. It follows a rape investigation, and in a welcome change from season 2, it seems like tons of research went into it. They covered how the victim copes mentally, how friends and family take it, how it's covered in the news, how creepy a lot of 'normal' stuff men do can be. And Olivia Colman and David Tennant were still great. This was a harder season to watch because of the subject matter, but it was generally handled really well.

I recommend the whole series. Season 2 is unfortunately bad (but watchable), but at least there's season 3 after it.

I haven't really seen David Tennant in anything else but he usually seems really campy. In Broadchurch he's not campy at all. He's just an angry Scot and he's great.

I'd would have said hi, but tomorrow I've got to spend hours queueing, just like Fei. Except I'll be queuing at a polling station, I won't even get a CD out of it. boo

Last time I voted in London, I had to queue for like 3-4 hours.
