Hipsterdom started since SG was big.

Who was the first to don skinny jeans?
Who has a giant beard?

Who only consumes artisan locally sourced toilet paper?

I have never owned skinny jeans (I've actually recently found it hard to find jeans that aren't skinny though). I have a small beard. I haven't been in a Whole Foods since 2007.

I don't even wear any jeans. I have a beard, but it's not super big. I don't think I'm very hipster.

The RDM has a pretty massive beard. His jeans are baggy, though.

He might be an SG hipster frontrunner.

I have a beard, primarily wear checkered and plaid shirts, and work as a freelance designer.

Livin' the dream!

I guess my veganism bumps up my hipster creds a bit. However, the RDM has more and better veggie recipes than I do.

The RDM's recipe game is pretty hardcore.

Brooklyn is pretty hard to compete with, too, though.

SG seems to be hipster central these days.

Frankly, the clear winner would have to be someone living in Thailand making a living off woodworking and surfing in their spare time. But that guy wouldn't be posting around here anymore.

I'm very tired of the ill-defined notion of a hipster.

That said,we spent over $100 on vinyl records today, so that probably counts in someone's definition.

Skinny jeans? Back in the 80's we would just call them jeans, we would wear them, patch the knees and if they were too long, we rolled them up!

No beard for me sadly.... As for the artisany of the locally produced vegan gluten GMO free toilet paper, I pass!

Have a nice day

I see hipsters quite a lot over here.
Believe it or not, living in the middle of hipster land is not that bad, especially knowing that the whole neighbourhood voted against a certain person who shall not be named.

I think I definitely treated "hipster" as a pejorative in its heyday, but less so now. Mostly a subtle jab, especially when I prolly fit the general description in many ways.

The RDM has been reading a bunch of Beat generation stuff these days, and they use hipster as a negative.

Labelling other people as hipsters is always used to belittle their life choices, so it's definitely an insult. However, I find it about as valid as insulting someone for being a tree hugger, a pacifist or a socialist, aka totally invalid.

If people want to be hipsters, it's a free country, they can do so. I don't care as long as they don't infringe on my right to eat cheese and meat.

The stereotype of a hipster tends to bring with him/her good food and booze. Hipsters contribute to the RDM's quality of life, so he holds nothing against them besides judging their choice in pants.

Hipsters here like meat (pulled pork) and stuff that's more expensive than it ought to be, but also organic, fair trade, bean to cup, farm assured, cruelty free vegan shit. It's not an outright derogatory term.

Nobody actually provided a very clear description of what a hipster is. Just some vague "they wear this", "they eat this", that sort of thing.

I think it bugs me because people conflate "hipster" and "pretentious", and because of that people often write off any value to what so-called hipsters do. I think there is a type of person who looks like a "hipster" and who is pretentious: they do certain things for image alone but their underlying values or beliefs aren't what they're trying to project.

However, if somebody who happens to have a beard opens an independent coffee shop that has interesting interior design and slightly more expensive than usual coffee with single source beans or whatever, it bugs me when this is automatically dismissed as "hipster" and thus "pretentious" (whether that's explicit or implied). Same with craft beer, record stores, etc. Why should we discourage unique local businesses run by people who earnestly care about what they do?

Anyway, dudes with waxed moustaches annoy me too, but if I find out those dudes are being productive members of their community, I'll let their style choices slide.

Surely you should create the poll first?

What I don't understand with the whole hipsters hate thing is that for the most part they're just copying preexisting trends. If anything, they're just combining those trends.

But yeah, saying indie shops are good and promoting fair trade, organic, non GMO stuff? Saying vintage stuff should be re-used or recycled rather than landfilled? Nothing new under the sun, things were already like that in the 20th century where I'm from.

Hipsters are just kinda modern versions of hippies and left wing idealists, more or less.

My earlier point was that I think most people equate "hipster" = "pretentious" (though a clear definition of hipster is elusive) but then call people hipsters based on style choices and interests, whether those people are being pretentious or not.

For the record, I assume the guy in Cid's photo above is a massive tool. I just prefer to use an unambiguous term like "tool", "idiot", or "asshole" (all apply) rather than the nebulous term "hipster".

I think the kneejerk reaction to point out attire and style choices is because its a much easier and more understood "shortform" for hipsters. When you're right, it's prolly more to do with their attitudes and being pretentious and a general sense of detachment from genuineness.

I just looked up the definition of hipster and man I was way off

adjective: hipster

In all seriousness the definition I had been going by seems to be wrong.

I thought it was someone stuck in their own generation with their mind closed to all new things.

"Only the music from when I was growing up is any good"

Oldtakus with their "All new anime is shit"

and of course all new videogames

Most anime of my generation was bad. Most new anime is also bad. There were a few gems among the older anime. I had a good idea of what a lot of those were, although I'm sure I missed some too. There are surely a few gems among newer anime. I do not have a very good idea of what those are, although I've seen one or two.

The same could be said for video games, probably. However, I feel like I have a better grasp on what's good for newer games still. I'm sure I miss a lot of good stuff though, because it's hard to keep up with it all.

I'm not even going to pretend I've scratched the surface on what's good in music. Though generally speaking, the idea of most music from any generation being bad surely still applies.

For the most part Im open minded to new stuff, TV is definitely better than the 90s.

My friends accuse me of being an oldtaku a lot though because Im not interested in watching all their anime suggestions. The big difference with anime is when I was getting into in the 90s you tended to be casaully aware of every anime out there I mean you at least recognized the names even if you hadnt seen them or had no idea of quality. It was a much smaller selection.

Now we're fucking drowning in anime. Seems like Kotaku announces like 40 new anime every quarter of the year and the math just gets real crazy real fast. The chances of someone being knowledgable in what's actually out there just isnt feasible anymore.

Speaking of new TV, you should watch West World. Then post in our West World thread.

I would call us digital hipsters, if that counts for anything.

We did the whole internet thing before the unwashed masses did, and grew up in a timely enough fashion to understand that it's only as real as you want it to be, unlike actual reality. The rest of the world is still struggling with that concept.
