This is true for Grave of the Fireflies too, real kids would probably never have managed to convey so much emotion as I can't imagine a 5 year old being good enough at acting Setsuko's role... Then again I might be wrong as Nobody knows is just as heartbreaking and the kids acting in it are brilliant

Even though I haven't seen those examples, I wholeheartedly agree with Doom on this point. Animation can be a beautiful thing and to suggest that any animated work that's any good could be just as good or better if it weren't is hopelessly narrowminded.

You also forgot the oversaturation of anime in the west, killing the supposed "anime boom". Ten years ago, stuff like Gundam Wing and DBZ were popular as fuck on Cartoon Network, making way for anime popularity increase in the US. Now, cartoon network can't afford to air anime because no one cares anymore and shows would have extremely craptastic ratings.

So with oversaturation, lack of sales (due to a myriad of factors, whether it be piracy, prices, quality, or the fact that anime is a niche product to begin with), and lack of interest, companies went out of business leaving anime in its wake, and making way for more niche anime for a niche group of people.

Here's what happened, in a nutshell.

In that long expanse between Voltron and Bebop, pretty much all anime available in "the west" (meaning just the USA and Canada) was a 6th-or-7th generation VHS tape of a fansub. It developed a following among geeky college students.
Video Rental places near college campuses realized there was a demand, and began importing the actual videotapes after realizing NTSC and NTSCJ were practically the same thing. Those geeks in the 'Anime Clubs' could now rent a copy of Bubblegum Crisis that isn't all blurry and gross.
Distributors began licensing anime directly from the producers, and began selling those VHS tapes (and eventually DVDs).
Pokemon became popular, and anime was back on television.
Some kid's mom accidentally rented a copy of "large-breasted cartoon girl takes her top off for about twenty seconds" instead of "pikachu looks cute". Outrage ensues. Those moms are made aware of Urotsukidoji. Epic outrage ensues.
In order to not be cornholed out of business, the few distributors that weren't do so already begin to chop out anything that would offend a nun. By a strange coincidence, that happened to affect pretty much anything that was popular in Japan. As a result, the anime available in "the west" began to be recognized as massacred when the internet made it possible to see stuff those distributors didn't even bother trying to clean up.
Between the perfect storm of overly-sanitized stuff being the norm for the west, and a general escalation of both explicit and implied sexuality creeping into the stuff that stayed in Japan, the perverts largely took over the entire genre, with a tiny few exceptions. General stigma ensues, and anyone expressing interest is dismissed as being either immature or a pervert (and sometimes both).
