http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=235030?cid=OTC-RSS&attr=CVG-General-RSS

Quote:
Most of the criticisms have come because the first half of the game is very linear.

"But we've got a story to tell, and it's important the player can engage with the characters and the world they inhabit before letting them loose..."

The game's director Motomu Toriyama added: "We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom."

They might have a point - reviewers don't seem to be able to make up their mind on the title.

what shallow excuses for this shell of its former self.
It's not like there weren't any recent examples of something that 'too hard to do' that came out a couple of weeks ago, like the excellent PC game Mass Effect 2. boo

once again

mass effect 2 is not an open world game. if me2 is an open world game, so is ff12 or dq8 and about every rpg ever.

and the plot isn't compelling either.

Because I said the same thing on tfb and I'm tired of repeating it. People can cite ME2 all they want, and then realize that ME2 has about 10 minutes worth of plot development and then press the x on the top right corner of their browser window, top left corner if they're using mac!

I agree that square sucks. I'm just saying that there is truth to his statement.

For example, would you say that Oblivion or GTA have compelling stories?

That said, I won't defend Square. They made an rpg that barely has any towns, barely any npcs, or exploration or sidequests. I don't think anyone wants FF to be open world, but I don't think anyone wants FF to be Xenosaga on steroids either.

Depends on the game, really. And I certainly wouldn't say that Square's RPGs have compelling stories either.

There's definitely truth to his statement, but the biggest truth that lies in the statement is that they're too fucking lazy or creatively bankrupt to make it work.

yeah the hilarious thing about it to me isn't the open world comment, it's the compelling stories comment. I have played maybe less than 10 games ever that have "compelling" stories.

And pretty much none of them are made by Square or Enix.

There is a line between entertaining and compelling.

and yeah I agree. this is square enix, arguably the richest rpg developer in the world. and this is their excuse, and ff13 is their answer. They have all the resources in the world.

And Kitase's regressing further and further with every release on that aspect. Not cool bro.

Well, Kitase is the producer, Toriyama directed (and I think wrote?) ff13.

Not that it matters.

And something else comes up today. To paraphrase the whole thing, "It's too hard making world maps in HD".

square LOL wrote:
In an interview featured in the latest issue of Famitsu (via a transcript posted at Square Enix fan site FF Reunion), Square Enix super producer Tetsuya Nomura said of Versus, "We were hoping to debut it at E3, but we're not sure now."

The slippage appears to be due to some changes that are being made to the world map system. "For displaying characters on the world map, we were originally planning on using the method used by FF#, with a small Noctus running about on the screen. But that didn't look too great, so we ended up switching to the method used by FF#."

Those "#" signs are presumably meant to be the roman numerals of certain games in the main Final Fantasy series, but Famitsu had to block them out. Both Famitsu and Nomura agreed that the change is a major one.

I can only hope this basically means:

FF7 style where you have a big head popping out of a forest is stupid so we're going it FF12/DQ8 style.

Well i sincerely hope it goes the DQVIII route as it had basically the best modern world map of any JRPG. Probably still too hard for the good folks over at Square-Enix. I mean, they had to go and hire Level 5 to get that done.

That shit is why you prototype fancy new gui features before you spend a ton of time and money coding the thing "for reals."

Too hard, my ass. It's too expensive.

He should start considering shutting his mouth.

http://kotaku.com/5476141/kitase-ffvii-remake-only-possible-if-it-can-be-done-in-a-year

So basically he's one interview away from admitting that FFXIII is a step back from the old games.

I don't know what you're talking about Ward. Seems pretty heavily implied there already.

In other words, I can easily choose to interpret it that way.

Well I agree, that's what I meant. He's literally one step away from actually saying 'we dropped the ball with FFXIII - but we really tried hard - I swear - so you should buy it!'.

Unless there was a mass office shred-fest after that damn movie tanked, they should still have all of the assets.
Just dig up all of the 3DSMax (or whatever) files all of the pre-rendered backgrounds were, uh, pre-rendered from, and import them into PS3 objects.

However, I'm almost willing to bet a handful of guys have been tinkering away on it in a basement somewhere since before that 'tech demo' appeared a couple or three years ago.

The problem is that the old objects are such a low res.

They'd have to go and redo each and every pre-rendered bg.

But since the game is done and has been done for over a decade, and they've grown as a developer since, that shouldn't take long at all.

Why does an FF7 remake have to have top of the line graphics? This shows their priorities and it's not on the game.

As far as Kitase is concerned, FFXIII isn't even really a role-playing game. "We didn't really intend to work within with the RPG template," he says. "We wanted to create a new game, even a new genre. The way we look at it, there's isn't a certain format that we have to keep to and build a game around. Rather, it goes the other way around. We create a game and, depending on what works or doesn't work within that game, it ends up reflecting different staple elements."

Is the sodding thing out yet? I'm dying to flame here.

Also, I was reading a news blog earlier and nearly screamed at "FFVII-2?"

Turns out it was a fan video that wasn't funny, but goddamn.

why would it be out when the over-publicised release date is 9th March?

and yeah why do they keep saying shit about being inspired by Call of Duty and that they wanted to make an RPG for people who like those kinds of games? It makes no sense.
